Why are European countries increasing defense spending?

I have been hearing a lot about this lately, why all of a sudden are places like the U.K.
doubling their defense budget?

Well because we need to be able to defend ourselves against Russia. We have always depended on US military for that until now, but that's no longer possible. I don't approve of Trump forcing us to do this, but I DO approve of us doing this regardless. Its ridiculous that we should depend on the US for this. I just fear its still too little too late. And the EU is way too divided to even work efficiently together on this.

@FeetAreFantastic Don't worry, we are rebuilding the U.S. military, we will still come to the
aid of our allies. It reminds me of when I was in during the Carter admin. We were NOT combat
ready. Although I was in a Combat squadron, we were not doing enough. Then Reagan was
elected and things did a 180, we worked hardware, trained more, and competed more, thus
turning us into the fighting force we needed to be.

@DogMan I have no doubt about the strength of your military. But Trump hasn't shown any indication that he will come to our aid. Quite the contrary. Besides, I think its good if we are no longer dependent on others.
@FeetAreFantastic oh I think he would in a heartbeat!

@FeetAreFantastic We will ALWAYS help our allies. Hell, Ukraine is NOT an ally, but we
have been helping them more than Europe.

@FeetAreFantastic If Trump went around saying "don't worry, we'll save you" to Europe, they would do nothing and things would stay the same. So Trump comes out and warns Europe that if they want protection, they had damned well better increase defense spending and at least reach the NATO goals to which they've agreed. I support this. I and most most US taxpayers are tired of Europe taking advantage of our generosity. Man-up Europe.
@DogMan Allies??? What Allies??? Trump is too busy trying to crush our industries with his taxes...
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
@HootyTheNightOwl perhaps he means his new ally Russia.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@HootyTheNightOwl You make no sense. Try again.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@HootyTheNightOwl Not that it has anything to do with our Allies, but why the hell
do you believe Trump is going to crush industries with taxes? That is the opposite
of what is true. The only thing he is crushing, is government waste, fraud, and theft.

@JimboSaturn We are not siding with Russia, Trump just doesn't want to continue paying
100's of Billions every year for an endless war. It's as simple as that.

We will always stand with Europe. Trump is not the monster you think he is. America is
going bankrupt, that is not good for anyone. We waste more money than most countries
GDP.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@DogMan Well he did side with Russia, after a couple of days with Putin, he said that Zenlynskky started the war and that he is a dictator. Vance then insulted NATO saying they are like the soviets, and Trump has encouraged Russia to invade countries who do pay up like NATO is a protection racket.

It's in the US and Europe's interest not to let Putin do as he pleases in the world, it's a good investment in the long run. The reason the war has gone on this long is that Ukraine is not a NATO country and we can't escalate the way we would like.

I do agree with you that the world has relied on the US for far to long. The world is learning that the US is not longer an ally and friend necessarily.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@JimboSaturn I'm not sure I believe this part that you wrote. "Trump has encouraged Russia to invade countries who do pay up like NATO is a protection racket"

The end result, no matter what, will be Ukraine losing some land. Should we do it now? or keep
running down the coffers while Ukraine is reduced to rubble? Will it be better in 5 years if
we keep pouring money into it? China and Russia would love that wouldn't they?
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@DogMan He literally said that and it is recorded. It was one of his stories "hey sir, what if we don't pay, and then I said, hey if you don't pay, I will encourage people to take over your country"

North Korea and China will be emboldened if Putin gets his way not to mention Putin himself. Just make if costly and the America First people will give in!

Now Trump has sucessfully exhorted Ukraine, need help? give me 50% of your minerals. So they are left with 20% less land and half their minerals gone from a war they didn't start.
