Why are European countries increasing defense spending?

I have been hearing a lot about this lately, why all of a sudden are places like the U.K.
doubling their defense budget?

Because nato is less effective as it looks like Russia is going to be given large parts of Ukraine. It's clear therefore that if Russia invaded Poland or the Baltic States in a similar manner USA won't put troops in the ground or supply weapons without wanting huge payments. So Europe has to fight Russia on it's own when it happens.

@OldBrit That won't happen. You know, Biden didn't do anything while Russia was building
up forces to go into Ukraine. He even waited a couple weeks after the war started before
he did anything. He thought they would roll over Ukraine like they did in Crimea, and he
would not have to do anything. Believe me, if there is a war, you want a Republican
POTUS in the White House.

@DogMan seriously most people in Europe believe the "contract" we had with you about resisting Russian aggression is broken. We're on our own now when the war comes

@OldBrit Yeah, Obama did nothing about Crimea, and Biden did nothing about Ukraine.

Now Trump has to fix it, because it looks like everyone else wants an endless war. Has
Europe been working for peace? It doesn't sound like it.

@DogMan Munich 30 September 1938.

History repeating itself. You appease the bully dictator he'll simply cause greater hell elsewhere later. Then it was Poland the next year. I wouldn't be surprised if history completely repeats itself.

@OldBrit It won't, don't worry. But you need to get rid of Starmer before it does, that's for sure.

He will be another Chamberlin.
