Should petroleum and energy be rationed to tamp down on escalating costs/prices? Would a black market make rationing impractical?

BlueVeins · 22-25
It just doesn't seem like it would solve much, enforcement costs would be a problem and the last one to the pump would lose. High oil prices suck, but at least they're effective at rationing limited resources by incentivizing people and systems to use less when possible. Sucks that the poor are hit hardest under this paradigm, but they'd arguably be in an even worse position if they couldn't reliably access the stuff. :\

@BlueVeins Rationing in the sense that everyone gets a set allotment and no more. So, no one would lose in that regard. The question is if a "black market" would then allow those with connections, power, and/or influence could get more than their allotment.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@MarkPaul let's be honest, the US government will create tiered rationing systems where the rich get far more and the poor get far less.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco Well, that would be a downside of such a plan with exemptions, special considerations, etc. It truly does make the idea impractical, but I still wonder if it COULD work with proper oversight and sincere effort.

I hate big govt, but gasoline needs to be regulated as a utility that everyone uses. Get the politicians, lobbyists, and corporate executives out of it.
Isolate the market to domestic sources, only...remove global impacts since we are able to be energy self-sufficient...remove the constraints that dem presidents like to impose on land permits and drilling...and create standards for marketing, transportation/ movement and consumption. Set the market price and have all rate increases go through a regulatory approval process, when expenses can be proven to have increased.

Rationing is not a good idea. I hate the idea of always imposing limitations on consumers/citizens. Govt is supposed to protect us, not control us.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@easterniowegin Society-wide regulation can only occur by politicians who are influenced by lobbyists and corporate executives.
Or we could try and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. We pretty much have to anyway.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow That doesn't put you a good light, Bernie Madoff.
@MarkPaul Lol. You are the fraud desperate for validation from strangers. That is all you.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow It's kind of amazing how you accept no responsibility, no accountability, and see yourself exclusively in a flattering light, Kanye.

Based on my professional experience and training that is usually a sign of someone desperately hiding from the truth about themselves.

Smartest thing would be to end the war on fossil fuels. Biden too controlled by environmental extremists to do this.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@Strictgram So, to hell with technology and clean energy. Stick with the inefficiency of fossil fuels for expediency and familiarity?

Rationing = black market
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@Northwest That could be a built-in problem.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Most of the problem right now is supply side. They are enjoying making a lot of money. Rationing would reduce demand and a lot of them would show production to match.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@ViciDraco That, and the oil crisis is legitimately extremely difficult to solve, and the one real solution -- quitting oil -- is incredibly politically difficult because both parties are fighting for the suburbs.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@BlueVeins I think quitting oil would ultimately be good for the suburbs. Honestly, suburbs make great candidates for putting solar panels on roofs. Pair that with electric cars and you can take a nice bite out of not only oil but also dirty electric. But all those poor oil execs would lose the money they pay off the politicians with.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@ViciDraco Yeah that's probably the case I should be making, but also I kinda want to glass the suburbs soooo I usually just pretend that eliminating R1 zoning is a realistic political goalllllllllllll
