Living memory is generally modern times I suppose.

@Ceinwyn I have heard this before, perhaps you are right.

1966 is when it is thought the modern age began, when in Britain we ceased to be shackled by our Victorian past, and in America the civil rights movement began to bite.
But you could argue the eighties, with the development of the underclass , and Thatcherite greed.
Then again about 2000 and the introduction of the INTERNET, and a worldwide society. Interest in global issues.
The present age is grim. We are just commodities now, to be exploited.
At this traces back to the eighties
So let’s settle for that.

ya'll still are with remnants of the caste system (queens, dukes, princes, princesses, knighthood, etc.); quite frankly, given their past, they should be stripped of wealth and title and tossed out on the street with everyone else....

@wildbill83 I think more of late Victorian morality, attitudes , values
No Sunday sport, theatre, shops.
Attitude to gays, divorce , censorship,
The family as a unit.

I would say so.
Kinda shocking that the 80's ended nearly 40 years ago though.
Also worth a thought is the fact that Gen.X became adults in the 80's

2023 - 1990 = 33 years. 33 is closer to 30 than 40. Is that explanation enough?

Yes Compared to the 1950’s when we didn’t have a landline… they got electricity wired to the farms a month before I was born. We were pumping water from a well outside of the house, heating water for dishes, baths and laundry on a propane cook stove, took baths in a portable metal tub. by a wood burning stove in a back room, no air conditioning, doing laundry in a wringer washing machine and hanging it out to dry on a clothesline, grew most of our food, baked our own bread, pies etc and didn’t frequent restaurants, made most of our clothing and did simple things for fun

@cherokeepatti Bleak then. Post war Britain was pretty grim. But there was a massive housing program to get rid of the slums. And no extreme poverty.

I think most Modern Histroy courses start with the topic of World War 1 .. And that started in 1914.. So i guess anything after 1914 is modern history..

@turnedtostone And the meh of times.

@turnedtostone Probably yes.
But in England we had Mrs Thatcher, who created mass unemployment, and created the underclass. Anti gay too. Very hypocritical.

Around 1500. Type "when did the modern age begin" in most search engines and the year 1500 is the approximate starting period for the modern era, as opposed to the Medieval and Ancient eras that preceded it.

I think in comics the 80's was the start of the Modern age in comics, Gold was the 30's to 50's, 60's to 70's was the Silver Age.
SoLeRiMix · 31-35, M
More like the beginning of a new era.😇

Yes. Unless you're joking, modern starts before that by a lot.
It would depend on context I would think

I loved the 80s. Modern indeed.

Yes. Because I can remember it.

Now that incandescent light bulbs are a thing of the past everything is ancient history. Who listens to AM radio anymore?
Landline telephones aren't even maintained anymore. Haven't written a check in years.

Considering that there are still people alive who remember the 1930s & 40s, yes. The 1980s is relatively recent.

@BlueGreenGrey Not asking if any time before I was born was modern. I turned the grand age of two in 1980.
