Who is your favorite historical person from your country and why?

Elessar · 26-30, M
Napoleon 😏

@Elessar 👎😂

GeniUs · 56-60, M
Has to be Aneurin Bevan; has probably saved hundreds of thousands of lives with his policy to implement the NHS.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin (also massive).
(So we have a Welshman and a Scotsman from the UK...)
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@GeniUs Can't really improve on those two. Perhaps also William Beveridge, architect of the modern welfare state 🇬🇧
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Winston Churchill. Not only a Great War prime minister and leader, who helped defeat the evil Nazi regime, but his gift as a writer and orator is excellent. I started his “The English Speaking Peoples,” many years ago, and was blown away by it. Unfortunately, I never got that far because some crisis or another happened, and my focus was on that more than reading. I moved house, and think the book was donated, like many I had to leave behind.
originnone · 61-69, M
@Carissimi Wow....I'm sorry the book is gone. My wife and I saw the movie about him a few years back. I hope it was true to life because I learned a lot. What a great person. I did leave the theater kind of mad at FDR for not coming to British aid sooner.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Astrid Lindgren. Thanks to her I grew up to great children's stories and movies. She was also moving equality into her characters. For example Pippi Longstock or what she's called in English. A super physically strong independent girl. I learned early about the gap between rich and poor thanks to her movies and they're all so well made.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly I loved those books when I was growing up 😌
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I find Eleanor Roosevelt quite admirable.
originnone · 61-69, M
@DearAmbellina2113 Eleanor Roosevelt was indeed quite admirable and ahead of her time in working toward racial equality.
I know and it's sad people are going to be offended by this one but Churchill springs to mind.

Some idiots call him a fascist.... but wait until they hear about the guy he was fighting!
@Carissimi I just cannot get into the mind of such individuals.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Be thankful for that. @BritishFailedAesthetic
@Carissimi I am!
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Probably Sir Issac Newton.
A man from long long ago who without the aid of much in terms of scientific equipment (certainly by today's standards) took theoretical ideas; tested them and produced scientific facts on which much of physics has evolved ever since
Gloomy · F
Emil Cioran his nihilistic and bleak philosophy helps me go on
originnone · 61-69, M
@Gloomy I don't know how you can say that....it's such a curse.
I have loads so it would be hard to choose. At the moment Patrick Pearse.
JSul3 · 70-79
Way too many to list, but being the movie fan I am, here is my pick: Carl Laemmle....a Jewish immigrant who created Universal Studios, but that's not why I chose him.
During WW2 he was responsible for sponsoring many of those endangered by Hitler and his Nazis, and securing their safe passage and entrance to the US.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Eugene V Debs should have been president.

I don't have a favourite but I'll say George Papanikolaou. Due to his dedication to his research- and it's important to mention the help of his wife and lab partner- many women have been saved.
HumanEarth · 56-60, M
Kennedy he was our last true president of the USA. He exposed so much and he was killed 6 days later by our own government
Gordon Lightfoot. I remember seeing him on TV sometime in the 80s where he says he's not a politician and doesn't have the experience or training to comment on such things. And here I am thinking, Who is this guy? Isn't he from a generation w/all the answers???
originnone · 61-69, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP I like celebrities who do that as well.
revenant · F
Moliere ...the art of taking the piss out of the rich and famous
BalthazarBlake · 56-60, M
Diana. Unfairly treated and died far too soon.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
John Olinger. He rocks the casbah!
Caballero · 31-35, M
Agüeybaná II

Pierre Elliot Trudeau for his leadership style particularly in dealing with the Quebec separatist movement. He implemented the War Measures Act in 1970 during the October Crisis, a controversial move to address domestic terrorism in Quebec.
originnone · 61-69, M
@caesar7 WOW! Well thought out....
Lilnonames · F
Jackie Kennedy..
I think she is a very smart and beautiful lady
Sitting Bull, because he led his People to fight oppression.
originnone · 61-69, M
@NativePortlander1970 There was a guy at the place I used to work who always bragged about himself. We called him Telling Bull.
