@Barny52 Well, they didn’t lose their king to Meghan—and didn’t Princess Diana spill a bit of the Royal tea with her book ? Sarah Ferguson ? Just saying…
@bijouxbroussard Wallis was in my parents lifetime and i remember them saying how they must of loved each other to give up so much, she wasn’t disliked, Diana and Ferguson were my lifetime and a bit of a upset in 90s over books but can’t remember much, perhaps its MSM winding everyone up over Megan and it will be forgotten like others
@CountScrofula I remember reading about Oswald Mosley and his “Blackshirts". We’re taught that during WWII, the Allies were the "good guys” and in terms of the Holocaust they were—but—you look at what the Brits were doing in India and Africa, and at U.S. Jim Crow (sending racially segregated troops to fight Nazism, right ?). Plus the treatment of American citizens of Japanese descent, stripping them of their belongings and their freedom—and then sending draft notices to their sons in the concentration "internment" camps. Definitely more complicated than it first appears.
@bijouxbroussard Yeah absolutely. The depression was a time of political extremes for everyone and there was a huge surge in far left ideas at the same time as the rise in fascism. The Spanish Civil War was sort of a battlefield for this stuff.
Related to Oswald Mosley is a favourite song of mine about a massive street battle where his fascists marched through a Jewish neighbourhood and was met with a sea of angry people.
@CountScrofula I couldn’t access the age-restriction (I don’t have an account) but I looked up the song. It’s great ! Of course, in the comments there was someone defending Mosley, saying it was a reaction to "all the immigrants pouring in, just like now". Clearly someone unaware of the British habit of "empire-building"—pouring into other people’s countries and colonizing them. 🤨
The "anti-woke" crowd is complaining that now the WOKE is trying to "cancel" figures like Winston Churchill. But the thing is, Nazism was a collection of ideas that were really common at the time. The British Empire was also committing genocide throughout the 20th century. So yeah, it doesn't surprise me that so many western countries were cool with the Nazis. WWII wasn't an ideological war, after all, we sided with the Soviet Union and Maoist China.
Erm wasn't that the Royal who fled with the American and that picture shows both of them? They were well known in the royal family as Naxi sympthasisers. Are you going to mention Prince Philip's war service? I figured you'd also be anti-royal.
I'm not sure who those other two might be, But Hitler's mustache is plain to see. Your description makes them sound regal and grand, But a more vile man, history could not withstand.
At first, he fooled the world with ease, But his true nature, was eventually seized. Until that fated day many had heard, That he was a fine man, most absurd!
For it's not always easy just to know, When to shake hands or when to say no. Sometimes we're misled by those in power, And caught up in circumstances that are most sour.
So let's not judge those royals of the past, For mistaken hands shaken that didn't last. We can't see the pressure that they were under, And their hearts may very well have been full of thunder.
Let's focus on the lessons which we can learn, And strive for a better world, in turn. With empathy and understanding as our guide, We'll build a brighter future, side by side.
@DrRiddler Very well written but I still have to disagree. There is no need for royalty anymore and no matter how much real political power they have they will always have economic and diplomatic power and are extremly classist.
@Gloomy I did not claim that royalty is necessary or just, Just that we should not judge others based on the pasts disgust. They are still humans, raised in a strange way, And they should be treated fair without much dismay.
I don’t know a lot of Brits personally who are great fans of Edward & Wallis, anyway, they were entitled jerks. But there was a time when Hitler was just the current chancellor of Germany, and what that would mean to the world was not yet known. (Hitler with U.S. president Herbert Hoover )
