Australia to phase out live sheep trade by 2028

The first live sheep export was in 1845, Mauritius and Singapore were the first to accept our sheep.
We export to at least 17 countries including Vietnam, Israel, Qatar, Lebanon, China, Turkey and Russia, to name a few.
Personally I feel pleased that the live sheep export trade will come to an end.
Imagine being a sheep on a ship ladened with up to 85,000 other sheep. Being loaded onto the ship at the height of summer, a 3 - 4 week trip with no respite.
When the ships are being loaded, Fremantle bears the brunt of the odours, for as long as it takes to load the shipment. Unpleasant yes, what would the sheep say if they could talk to humans?

I'm opposed to live animal exports and the anthropomorphism of animals. Unnecessary suffering in the slaughter industry is really bad and anything that reduces it is good. I enjoy eating meat.

The meat trade is barbaric, I was helping a friend on one of his painting jobs on a house near an abattoir. 3 cattle trucks came and the poor animals were coerced down a small lane into an open door .The noise from the animals was horrific , then total silence ,I think the place is sinister now .

Agreed. The shipboard conditions are terrible. And frankly, adding value by slaughtering the sheep here is good for Australian business.😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@meggie Australia exports just about everything. Even camels to the UAE. (believe it) But with about 26 million people and being bigger that Euope with little water, (where its needed) developing industries for for such a small market locally is hard..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman But you could sell canned fruit to other countries presumably with less wastage due to shorter supply chains if you canned the fruit nearer where it was produced. And the profit margin on canned fruit must be considerably higher than on raw fruit.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon We do...😷
It would be good to see it phased out.
It must be awful for the sheep, crammed together, in the dark, on a moving ship.
To go from open pasture to that .....itd be such a shock to them.🫤

That is assigning human feelings to animals, a Disneyfication so to speak. A sheep knows no difference if he is in the hold of a ship, or in the bedroom of a mansion!
being · 36-40, F
@fanuc2013 have you ever been close to sheeps ? Animals also get happy under the sunshine and the warmth. That's their natural environment.. especially the sheeps. They're so sweet and sensitive animals ❤
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@being They look sweet and sensitive until you find yourself with a herd of feral sheep led by rams with horns on one side and and a cliff edge with a precipitous and lethal drop down to the Pentland Firth on the other.

@jshm2 The majority of sheep and cattle farming in Australia is done on pastoral and grazing lands not arable land. That is where we grow crops.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Must admit to being ignorant for the reason why the exporting at all.

After a certain point those countries wouldn't need any more. They do reproduce just fine.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@DeWayfarer From what I can gather, the sheep shipped to Muslim countries are slaughtered using the Halal method. Which is why they purchase live sheep.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Gusman oh my. Now look up the halal method.

Now expect more Muslims in Australia.

AI generated...

Halal refers to the permissible method of slaughtering animals according to Islamic law, known as dhabihah. This involves a swift cut to the throat to sever the jugular veins and windpipe, ensuring the animal is alive and healthy at the time of slaughter, while all blood must be drained from the carcass.

Cost again. The process keeps the meat fresher as well.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@DeWayfarer I know. This method of slaughter is abhorrent.
I watched a documentary about cattle killed in this way once. The cattle were literally shaking with fear, awaiting their turn.

Good news for nz
walabby · M
@MasterLee Those poor lonely farmers... 🙁
Customers will just get their live / fresh exports elsewhere.
And another round of farmer suicides and Chinese investor land seizures..
your not stopping live export. Your killing OUR economy

Wow they only ship them in the summer?
Gusman · 61-69, M
@SStarfish The export season runs from October (Spring) through to May (Winter)
So not exclusively in Summer.
@Gusman oh ok

@KiwiBird you're missing the point, they're arguing that we should do away {to save the planet} with Cows due to them creating Methane {Methane is destroying the planet 🙄🙄🙄} so when Cows are no more, all that's left for humans to eat is bugs
walabby · M
Yep. Now excess sheep will just be euthanized.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@walabby It seems nasty.. But there is always "waste" in a transition from one system to another..It just seems cruel because its alive and cute..😷
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@walabby The Australian Sheep flock is less than half what it used to be. Doubt there are any excess sheep. Maybe once again we will be able to buy mutton. That tasty flavoursome sheep meat that you have not been able to buy in recent years.

@OogieBoogie ... if you're relying on that kind of evidence to bolster your argument ... DON'T 😎😎😎

🤔 on 2nd thoughts, DO rely on that kind of evidence, as i've never laughed so much in all my life ... 🤭🤭🤭
@BigGuy2 Thats ok.
I understand some people dont like science, or practical evidence.
