Australia to phase out live sheep trade by 2028

The first live sheep export was in 1845, Mauritius and Singapore were the first to accept our sheep.
We export to at least 17 countries including Vietnam, Israel, Qatar, Lebanon, China, Turkey and Russia, to name a few.
Personally I feel pleased that the live sheep export trade will come to an end.
Imagine being a sheep on a ship ladened with up to 85,000 other sheep. Being loaded onto the ship at the height of summer, a 3 - 4 week trip with no respite.
When the ships are being loaded, Fremantle bears the brunt of the odours, for as long as it takes to load the shipment. Unpleasant yes, what would the sheep say if they could talk to humans?

Must admit to being ignorant for the reason why the exporting at all.

After a certain point those countries wouldn't need any more. They do reproduce just fine.

@DeWayfarer Live sheep for export means the sheep are shipped to other countries. Those countries then slaughter them for consumption.

@Gusman that's being finicky then. As well as very expensive.

It means as well they are still slaughtered first and exported afterwards. So no difference.

Business wise slaughtering first and exporting is cheaper. So it doesn't make any sense to ship live sheep for slaughter at the other end.

It could only be because of being finicky in taste.

It has nothing to do with being humane. Just pure economics.

I like to know the reasons why things are done. And money is the reason why this being stopped.

@DeWayfarer From what I can gather, the sheep shipped to Muslim countries are slaughtered using the Halal method. Which is why they purchase live sheep.

@Gusman oh my. Now look up the halal method.

Now expect more Muslims in Australia.

Halal refers to the permissible method of slaughtering animals according to Islamic law, known as dhabihah. This involves a swift cut to the throat to sever the jugular veins and windpipe, ensuring the animal is alive and healthy at the time of slaughter, while all blood must be drained from the carcass.

Cost again. The process keeps the meat fresher as well.

@DeWayfarer I know. This method of slaughter is abhorrent.
I watched a documentary about cattle killed in this way once. The cattle were literally shaking with fear, awaiting their turn.
