The state of Alabama has executed an inmate by making him inhale nitrogen gas until he suffocated to death. This is a new execution method 🇺🇸

What is your opinion on this? 🤔

Absolutely hideous. The whole process took 25 minutes and the prisoner was in visible distress. A previous attempt to execute him by lethal injection over a year ago failed when they were unable to raise a vein before the warrant expired. The USA is obsessed with firearms . . if a state feels the need to kill one of its citizens at all, why not by firing squad? At least that would be practically instantaneous if done competently. As if execution isn't punishment enough, torture has been added to the mix.

It’s disgusting and barbaric, USA is meant to be a civilised country

@kutee I agree, it’s a shit show, but it’s meant to be a civilised first world country
TrashCat · M
@kutee No drug use in the UK? Don't pretend the UK is without faults.

The UK has one of the highest rates of drug-induced deaths in Europe, with 76 deaths per million population
curiouslady93 · 31-35, F
@kutee Trump isn't the president, Biden is, no wonder the country is a laughing stock, which you pointed out.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
I don't know enough about the process. If you sedate someone first, then cut off their oxygen, then theoretically they "die in their sleep". I see little difference then between this and lethal injection. But if he was conscious when his oxygen was taken away, no doubt he would feel like he is suffocating.

My basic stance is against all capital punishment, because 1) it is not a deterrent, and 2) I think the motivation stems from an "eye for an eye" type of mentality. I generally view that no human has a right to decide whether another human lives or dies. That is why murder is wrong, and by extension that is why the death penalty is wrong.

@TrashCat But he was born and raised in Queens and lived in Manhattan.

Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker.

You can take a New Yorker out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the New Yorker.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@RedBaron now you're being pedantic. I didn't say every single New Yorker is more sane, I spoke generally. Most New Yorkers hate Trump. Do the math.
RedBaron · M
@basilfawlty89 I wasn’t the one trying to argue that he’s not a New Yorker.
Justice4All · 36-40, M
A quick severing of the head using guillotine was actually the most painless method of execution but everyone thinks that is barbaric.

@Patriot96 in uk, thousands of people used to come and watch live executions

We seem to have an almost unlimited supply of fentanyl illegally entering the country in which a lot of it is confiscated by the feds. Why not use that fentanyl for executions? It's quick, relatively painless and we have the supply.
Oh wait, that might make too much sense. That's something we can't have - using common sense.

Commit a death penalty crime and request that the State use fentanyl to execute you. Smith wanted to be executed by nitrogen gas and the State granted his wish.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@Diotrephes Smith chose nitrogen gas, but what were his other choices? I'm fairly sure fentanyl wasn't one of the choices. Also, just because he "requests" something, doesn't mean his request will be granted.

The normal IV didn't work on Smith so he requested the nitrogen and that is what he got.

The lesson is that if you commit a death penalty crime it might be best for you not to be taken alive.

And?? Sounds good to me! Don't like the punishment, don't commit the crime!!
Moon3624 · 18-21, F
@WildBill25
I have no moral issue with the death penalty for specific crimes.
I come from a country where shooting squad or beheading is the execution method
which I believe is far swifter and merciful than dying slowly by suffocating which is basically torture to death.

If you commit the crime don't be taken alive.

The victim did nothing to deserve suffering and dieing. Why are you so concerned about the murderer suffering, he/she deserves to suffer.
JSul3 · 70-79
@Baremine So cruelty for the sake of cruelty....because cruelty is the point?

Bring back the guillotine or the firing squad. Quick and swift death.
The death penalty seems outdated and unusual because most people are against it. It's a great way to kill the social contract itself. That's going to make it irresistible to conservatives.
Theyitis · 36-40, M
Inventing new methods of cruelty? That’s exactly what the average Alabama taxpayer expects public servants to do for them.
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@Theyitis how about we execute murders in the same way they killed their victims including letting them be raped
Theyitis · 36-40, M
@Patriot96 Who’s going to administer the raping? I bet you’ve already got your resume typed up, don’t you?

Smith got exactly the method of execution he wanted. So, he died happy.

Kenneth Eugene Smith executed by nitrogen hypoxia in Alabama, marking a first for the death penalty

[c=BF0000]"The execution was lawfully carried out by nitrogen hypoxia, the method previously requested by Mr. Smith as an alternative to lethal injection," Ivey wrote. "At long last, Mr. Smith got what he asked for, and this case can finally be put to rest."[/c]

i have mixed feelings on this. while i definitely understand there are some evil folks out there who deserve the worst of the worst. if they were eaten alive by tigers, i wouldnt shed a tear. i have also seen some of the dumbasses they put on juries.

It's all a bunch of nonsense. These people always find some over complicated and expensive way to kill someone and it costs the tax payers so much money.
JSul3 · 70-79
Took over 20 minutes to kill him.
Cruel and unusual punishment, anyone?
Patriot96 · 56-60, C
@JSul3 what about the person he killed
JSul3 · 70-79
@Patriot96 I have compassion for the victim and family members.

My point is that it should not take 20 minutes+ to execute someone.

If you were the killer, I would not want to take that long to execute you.
Got it?
joe438 · 61-69, M
@RedBaron yes, and Kathy Hochul and AOC are from New York and they’re definitely nuts.

He wanted to be executed by that method, so the State honored his wish.

basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
My opinion is that I'm completely against capital punishment. It's barbaric and doesn't bring lives lost back.

Sure, there are monsters out there that deserve death, but should the state really have power over life and death? Also, what if later evidence prove the executed was innocent? You can't bring someone back from the dead.
strongbow · 46-50, M
Good!...I wonder how much his victim suffered
WildBill25 · 26-30, M
@strongbow probably way less than his victim's family is! Fuck em! They should prolonged it!
curiouslady93 · 31-35, F
@strongbow That's great until you are falsely incarcerated, or the state decides they start doing that on people they deem a political threat.
