Americans. don't know who they are!?

Earlier this year, YouGov asked Americans to estimate what percentage of American adults fall under a certain identity group. On average, respondents assumed that
30% of Americans are Jewish,

27% are Muslim

21% are transgender and

20% earn more than a million dollars a year.

In reality, each of those groups account for
[big] less than 2% of the population.[/big]
YouGov is an international research data and analytics group.

1% are dicks, but they account for 50% of the internet.
@WintaTheAngle yes, tis too true

A) why must demographics always be the focus? People are more than that.

B) small minority demographics are "used" as political pawns so much that people begin to assume these must make up a larger % of the general population...otherwise why would so much attention be granted?!

The political landscape in this country is toxic, bc politicians are relying on relentless gaslighting to manipulate ppl.
@easterniowegin You seem to know quite a bit about gaslighting.

🤷‍♂️ If you allow yourself to be entangled in a media bubble that constantly talks about these terms, your perception get screwed. That's why, to know what really is going on, you need to measure. As Kahneman noted in a chapter that deals with the perception on causes of death:
The lesson is clear: estimates of causes of death are warped by media coverage. The coverage is itself biased toward novelty and poignancy. The media do not just shape what the public is interested in but are also shaped by it. Editors cannot ignore the public's demands that certain toppics and vieuwpoints receive extensive coverage. Unusual events (...) attract disproportionate attention and are consequently perceived as less unusual than they really are. The world in our heads is not a precise replica of reality; our expectations about the frequency of events are distorted by the prevalence and emotional intensity of the messages to which we are exposed."

- Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and slow
And it's those feelings and perceptions that are used by politicians (and marketeers) to sell you their stuff.
This is not just an American thing... it's a peoples' thing.

Why is transgender its own category like Muslim and Jewish Transgenders don't exist?
They make it sound like an entirely new religion lol

@SatyrService what point are u trying to make with ur post and why is it of importance?
@Chelsiegirl important? I think more interesting. that so many mis-estimate the makeup of our country and that may be driving some of the hostility so many experience. I did not make these categories I am sure many other categories are left out as well @NickiHijab
note the red ones are as actually exist,( census data) where the blue ones are what people think is true

After I see these types of polls I need to go wash my eyes. How could anyone think that 30% of the population lives in New York City? It's mind numbing. The respondents under-estimated a lot though too. Will say the methodology on this one is a little shaky. Multiple studies, without a massive sample size, going back to 2009. Although that just means it's probably worse.

So people are dumba$$es. What else is new?
@RedBaron if we wish change, we are ourselves with knowledge

@SatyrService Some things don't change. Temper your expectations.

The Jewish number is difficult because I've both known several and they are really well represented in the media i consume.

People have overestimated the Muslim population because of narratives that get sold about them trying to institute Sharia law in the US. It's easy to fearmonger of you build the groups you oppose into larger numbers, which is also true for trans. Gotta make them seem big and scary so you can think they are coming for your kids.

1 in 5 Americans may live like they make a million a year, but that debt is going to bite them some day. I don't think 20% of households do better than 100k a year, let alone that many millionaires.
And half the people are above average.
@LordShadowfire "average", has fallen Low
