Why do people still grow cotton today despite it's racist history?

Cotton by itself isn't racist
emiliya · 22-25, F
Are you trolling?
laotzu92 · 70-79, M
You would be well advised to avoid sugar. It has an even more racist history.
Sevendays · M
Yeah, a while back I was driving past a cotton field and could hear the cotton shouting racist taunts. 🙄
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Sevendays Oh yeah, I live in Oklahoma and hate when that happens.
HumanEarth · F
Maybe your racist for asking this question

Okay then tell me what material that is soft, breathable, and durable. That can grow almost anywhere on the planet.

It is used to make 99.5 of all clothing

Also the use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times. Fragments of cotton fabric have been found dating back to the fifth millennium.

Tell what jeans are you going to wear then, or tee shirt, skirts, dresses, suits, underwear and so much more. Yep, that's all made with cotton.
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
So, um...what are you wearing right now? 🤔
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@easterniowegin probably scratchy woolen underwear, cotton is too racist but scratchy wool can make a person irritable.
Thrust · 56-60, M
Jesus Christ you are the bottom of the Bell Curve

SW pays a pretty penny buying it for Qtips, one of their most popular gifts.
Do you realize that cotton is in everything and people make things racist
No object is

Rage bating on similar worlds is crazy
Xalvadora · 18-21, F
I don't think anyone is growing cotton. I think it's more of a nature thing than human. We have machines that picks cotton. We use cotton for a variety of things.
Though, if you were to ask the origin of North America, that'd be a more reasonable question, as the whites stole North America.
Do you just rock the polyester?
Socks must be sweaty

@Jessmess i hike and camp a lot and they have been a life saver. I want a blanket when i csn afford one that's 100 percent MW. I have one where a thin side is wool and the other side is a thicker synthetic material
Jessmess · 26-30, F
@Toofargone That sounds expensive and comfy! I have a wool blanket but it stays home.

You do realize that the southern American states are not the only places in the world where cotton is grown? US cotton is only 15% of world cotton production.

Softandsweet2 · 31-35, F
If someone e doesn’t grow it, I won’t have my cotton undies. Maybe you were just joking, but everything has something negative in its past.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Natural fibers are a lot healthier for humans. It would be best if the cotton was organic.
BoXoKnows · 61-69, M
Because synthetic fibers are hard to grow.

To stuff in pill bottles.

Q: Why do some people hate aspirin?

A: Because it's white, it works, and you have to pick cotton to get to it.
SteelHands · 61-69, M
Gossypol. It comes from cotton plant seeds. They use it to safely treat fruit trees so insect blight doesn't wipe out those crops like they did before the white man created the agricultural era.
Piper · 61-69, F
Oh good grief. 🤦🏼‍♀
dale74 · M
Why is slavery still around today in certain parts of the world and liberals won't care unless it is to bring it up in places that have banned the practices currently.
SW-User
Because it wasn't cotton that chose its lifestyle by enforcing that only slaves pick it.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User My grandpa planted cotton. Guess who picked it? He did and his children.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti I could have chosen better wording. It is not what I intended and at the time I wrote it, I didn't know what a big thing it was right now in your country.
TheShanachie · 61-69, M
It is grown mainly because it can be profitable. Sugar cane, Indigo, rice and several other crops were also grown during more racist times.
redredred · M
Why do we still play the Blues despite its racist history?
Why do we still eat BBQ despite its racist history?
ABCDEF7 · M
I thought the concept of racism is limited to humans only.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
Because people love cotton clothes a cotton fabrics.
Wireman · 31-35, M
Who is not racist?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Wireman flax and wool apparently
Wireman · 31-35, M

It's literally not possible for cotton to be racist. Think about it.

People are racist, not plants.
