This is Point Nemo, the spot farthest away from any land in the world. You are closer to astronauts aboard the ISS than humanity

2700km away from the closest landmass

That’s where I keep my heart locked in a chest at the bottom of the ocean 😂
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
@AlchemyFox Are you the real Davy Jones, Ma'am? 😁
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
@MissyChrissy Possibly. It would explain a lot.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@AlchemyFox i think mine is next to yours. Howdy neighbor.
helenS · 36-40, F
Does its remoteness imply that there are not enough nutrients in the water for wildlife to survive?
Ynotisay · M
@helenS Well, there would be a certain poetry to that I guess. 👍
helenS · 36-40, F
@Ynotisay ... and through the storms in all their thundering, my ship will sail, and will not sink!
Ynotisay · M
@helenS The Point Nemo Mantra. 👍
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
I'm pretty sure that the astronauts are further away than the nearest land for most of the time.
pride49 · 31-35, M
@ninalanyon The majority of satellites orbiting the Earth do so at altitudes between 160 and 2,000 kilometers.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@pride49 Yes? What's your point? That still puts them further from Point Nemo than Point Nemo is from land most of the time. 160 km altitude means that they are over 12 000 km from the surface at the other side of the Earth (180°). At 90° from Point Nemo they are still over 7 000 km away from it. So most of the time they are further away than the nearest land
pride49 · 31-35, M
@ninalanyon oh ok, I suppose at some point they both are and aren't the closet point from land
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
I wonder who took the picture and how?
helenS · 36-40, F
@MissyChrissy It may come from a ship perhaps – I have no idea.
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
@helenS Thank you anyway, Ma'am
BlueVeins · 22-25
@MissyChrissy @helenS maybe an RC drone launched from a ship? Could even be taken over the railing and then cropped.
MissyChrissy · 18-21, F
Wikipedia says that Point Nemo is used as spaceship cemetary. When they return empty from space stations they are made crashing here.
