The 60s has so many... Hard to choose... Universal soldier, Eve of destruction, this land is my land, so many

Arthur Scargill was the cause of the miners demise.

@Northerner That's interesting - I always blamed Margaret Thatcher. Cheers and Happy weekend!

I sang all the protest songs back in the 60's and 70's, and I don't think I have a favorite unless it is "Blowin' in the Wind."
war, by edwin starr

Eve of Destruction , by Barry McGuire i964/5 This song is still relevant to this day.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I have none. I don't regard "protest songs" as at all significant; just moaning.
As for the "Hippychick" duo. Never heard of them.
The government had no such policy, the miners were led into striking by their own union's leader who as a union full-time officer ensured he lost no pay personally; and many miners left it to form their own; but I doubt those two girls would know much about current affairs in their parents' (grandparents'?) youth.
Even if they are now trying to exploit it.
As for their name: "Hippy" is 1960s. Definitely of their grandparents' time.

@bijouxbroussard Actually I do like Blues music, and some soul, and the former did contain powerful comments about the situations they describe; but much of what are more usually called "protest songs", whose zenith was probably the 1960s, are neither of those and really pale into comparison with them.
I think I can name only two really good, strong protest songs that became very well known and are still played today. They are Ol' Man River (about cotton-plantation drudgery even well after the Emancipation) and Strange Fruits (inspired by a real, particularly evil lynching).

@ArishMell "Strange Fruit" was originally a poem ("Bitter Fruit") written by Abel Meeropol upon seeing the photo of the 1930 lynchings of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. There were many lynchings of black men, women and even children from the close of the Civil War throughout the early 20th century. Even later, if you include bombings by the KKK.
