If you mean a band that was original and influenced a lot of other bands: maybe The Pixies or Sonic Youth
A lot of good bands since then, but none really breaking much new ground.
The last generation of rock bands that formed to make it really big was the 2000s.
In a British context, you'd have to say Muse was rock band formed to be widely listened to and fill stadiums. They do a good live show too.
