Are you one of them girls?

I've officially sublet my apartment for the summer and I'm now living on my boat at a marina in Maryland. With a single-burner stove and a tiny microwave on the boat this means I'm eating out a lot. Well, this past Saturday night I was sitting down to a late dinner at a waterfront lunch/dinner place that turns into a bar at night. It was still relatively early, but the crowd was changing over.

I had finished dinner and was sitting there with a glass of wine enjoying the music and the breeze and watching the boats. He walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to dance. I politely declined.

"Are you one of them girls?" he asked. I recognized the words as a song lyric but couldn't quite remember the rest of the song. He, of course, laughed and I pretended I got the joke and went back to watching the boats and enjoying my wine.

And I made a mental note to Google the lyrics later. Obviously not a top priority, I just got around to Googling them now. The song is by Lee Bryce:
[big]One Of Them Girls[/big]
Song by Lee Brice

Are you one of them girls?
That peels off the Bud-Light label
Just might run a pool table
Roll your eyes if I call you an angel

Ain't you, one of them girls?
Ask you to dance, you say, "No"
Just to see how far I'll go
Your song comes on and your eyes closed
That's when I know, yeah
...
No, dude, believe it or not, sometimes it's not about you. Yes, I'll roll my eyes if you call me angel (or sweetie or baby or just about anything else) because I'm not your angel and rolling my eyes is my way of stopping myself from going all cra-cra on your ass. You do not want to see me go all cra-cra.

I have no interest in seeing how far you'll go, unless you're heading away from me. And yeah, I've gotten pretty good at pool the last couple years and have been known to pick at labels on a bottle or two. None of that has anything to do with wanting to see how far you'll go.

And if my jam does happen to come on and I do get up to dance, please know that that most certainly has nothing to do with you and you'd best stay clear.

i am one of "them" girls... and the most important part of that is that i define what "them" means.

if i am alone, it is my choice.

if i accept or reject your company, it is my choice, and nothing to do with you.

i admire persistence in most things, but not in guys hitting on me, no matter what the circumstances are.

i won't break your arm, and i don't want to break your heart, but i could arrange both.

i am a lesbian, i am not a convertible, i don't have a soft top.

i apply these rules universally. please respect them, as i always will.

@sarabee1995 When you wish to transit the Chesapeake & Delaware canals... perhaps consider getting one of these... 2.2KW, quiet not heavy and fuel efficient... I got it brand new in the box for $700 CDN ($500 US or so)... You could turn your electric boat into a hybrid when it is needed as you could charge your propulsion battery from the generator.

The other way I suppose is a hydro generator though your drive might be able to generate power while you sail? Some do some do not... Yes I am a bit of a geek technically...

I have not one but TWO Magma stainless steel barbecues for the stern rail both stored in the locker. The problem with them aside from what they cost is they truly get filthy when you use them and I like things clean.. and they take a lot of effort and time to get them clean so they are clean all right and stored away.. in case I forget just how much time and effort they take to get clean...

And yes I too would love to get back on a boat that was sailing to Bermuda..
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdqsailor1 I've thought of a generator to extend range under power... but... part of me likes that I currently run purely on pixie dust. 😁 🧚

Yes, she recharges while under sail. And I've added two solar panels as well.

I don't have your woodworking or fiberglass skills, but I'm pretty good with boat electricals. I installed the radome, gps, ship-to-shore, and cell antennas on the mast myself along with all the associated equipment down below.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 just because you have a generator does not imply that you have any obligation to use it. If you need it then you can decide and options are generally helpful. I have yet to take it out of the box but it’s available should I need it.

Excellent that you recharge while sailing. Few people realize how much power a sailboat delivers but you certainly do.

Good on you with electrical and electronic installations. Every skill you acquire will serve you well and make you more independent. Today I did electrical work. Yesterday refrigeration, plumbing and electrical. Next a new VHF in the whaler. It’s always something.

@pdqsailor1 Cancer sucks.

Have you read my featured story about my grandparents?
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 I read it... and yes you are totally correct cancer sucks. (I read that Putin is going in for cancer surgery so cancer almost always sucks we can make an exception in his case)... I was 26 years old when my Dad died, malignant melanoma that traveled to his brain and was inoperable.. and loosing him sent me for a long loop... but as I said he was a heavy smoker and that is a very bad thing... I am sailing his boat, I often think how he would react if he saw how it has evolved and stayed modern and relevant.. and some how when I hoist the sails I hoist them for a lot of people who are there in spirit with me. BTW - My Dad's parents also passed away shortly after one another... My Mother told me my whole life she wanted to live as long as her Grandmother... how old was her Grandmother? 89..well the day came and she turned 89 and so I said congratulations - so let me ask you are you finished or do you want to hang around longer? She decided she wanted to hang around longer... I said good. In January she turned 93 and is thank G-d healthy and happy... . I take her sailing EVERY weekend.. I use the whaler to take her to the club rather than the club launch so I can bring her close to the sailboat so she does not have far to walk.. She has a blast on the boat.. when I go to hoist a spinnaker she complains that it is too much work.. I ask her too much work for whom? Then I hoist the chute.. I keep her busy.. she has two of the four chihuahuas living with her so she has a routine... she has to get up to let them out.. she has to make food for them and they keep her busy.. We always have Dinner together on Friday nights and I am there almost every day... One problem is that one by one - she is loosing life long friends.. it is a consequence of getting old.. and there is nothing I can do about this..

I am the last man standing.. no siblings .. I love to sail, I love to solve problems and I come up with creative solutions to them, I am good at this. I can fix almost anything ... but I can't fix cancer. So I am going to give you some advice.. Do not ever smoke, take it easy on salt (with your Grandmothers history), wear sun screen, a hat and as much clothing as you can bear and keep sailing.. You have people out with you, watching over you every time you head out.. so keep doing it sailor.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdqsailor1 I've never smoked, not even once. I don't own a salt shaker, but I do like salty foods sometimes. I wear sunscreen and a cover ("hat") everywhere. Clothing? Well. When people are around, I am well covered. I won't comment on what happens when I'm out there alone. 🙂

My Wife, Mother and I spent the weekend on our boat which is about the same size as yours is.. We have a single burner induction cook cop and a small combination air fry/microwave oven - Galanz (available at Walmart)... Friday night we brought home made chicken soup, did egg noodles and had sliced roast which we warmed up... Saturday... chicken wings and French fries.., Sunday, did a home made hamburger helper type dish on the boat and Monday night - grilled chicken Caesar salad which was awesome.. I did pancakes for breakfast one day, eggs another, I do all the cooking (and the cleaning up afterwards) on the boat.

@sarabee1995 I guess I was in my teens where I learned from my Mother in her Kitchen... but it got serious after we were married as my Wife did not have a CLUE as to how to cook and so if we wanted to eat it fell to me so I would be calling my Mother asking how do I do this or that.. and I would write the steps on an index card.. I mean basics like how to cook rice.. and it evolved because honestly I had no choice... Then. I found out I could be good at it.. It was like some of the skills I developed on the boat.. sewing, plumbing, engine mechanics, electrical installations both AC and DC, electronic installations, refrigeration/air conditioning, cabinetmaking, rigging, over time I got skilled at a wide variety of tasks not just competence I actually got pretty good at these things... I just sewed new interior cushions... Tomorrow I will set the menu for the weekend on the boat and go shopping.. and I have to do a good job of it because our club is on an island so if I forget anything that would make for a problem.

Don't know the artist, but I tend to find that most musical styles have their cliche's....

Rock? Being a rebel, riding down (whatever!) highway, not taking it from 'the man', using and abusing women (or breaking hearts throughout the state if you're of the female persuasion) etc etc...

Country is just rife with cliches - smoking, drinking, hunting, guns, fast cars, momma, religion and the American flag....

The joke goes, play a country song backwards (a la all that satanic playing rock music backwards) and your dog comes back to life, you're still married and you're quite happy at work!

Me? I'm a moody gal; I have to be in the mood to dance/play pool/drink/talk/flirt etc etc. If I'm not tantalising company then it's not on you, it's just how I am at that very moment in time. And, if I am hip, cool and fly that one time you spent with me, don't expect it all the time, y'know?

It is what it is.

@sarabee1995 I always wear a hat, sun glasses, if its hot I will wear a short sleeved shirt with a collar (polo / golf type) and I almost never wear shorts almost always long pants.. I use SPF 30 on my face, neck and the open triangle under my neck, and arms and hands... I have been known to take a shower on deck (I don't like getting the head wet or the cabin steamed up) but I do this after dark... and when I am alone. I cook almost all our meals from scratch and use salt sparingly if at all but I will use it on some foods... I can't eat French Fries with out some salt.. and the one other exception is home made chicken soup which would not taste right otherwise but I get ALL of the fat out of it (custom made pot, drains from the bottom)... You are clearly well aware of what it takes to avoid common hazards... One other thing I do when sailing is to wear a life jacket with a built in harness and I clip myself on and I have to re-learn wearing sailing gloves. I changed out the wire life lines with spectra......
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdqsailor1
I sometimes wear a harness and clip in, but that is rare. It is only when I'm pushing her to the edge of her envelope for fun. 🙂
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 many years back I took our eldest Daughter sailing - we had as a rule made her wear her harness while sailing on the keelboat..and she resented this rule, but as I sat there while the boat is sailing along with the pilot steering it I thought.. what would happen to her if I were to fall over board?... I got up, I put on my harness and clipped it on next to her on the weather rail... She asked why I did this.. I said "what would happen to you if I fell over the side?" All of a sudden she was VERY satisfied with my answer and my action and realized that wearing a harness was not something we did to her but something we did for her - and it was not just for children, it was for grown ups too... she felt more grown up wearing her harness as I did it too... As I get older, I will become far more vigilant about using it..... few of us are perfect all of the time..
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@pdqsailor1 Yup. I get it. When I'm out with guests, I'm rarely sailing anywhere near where harnesses would be recommended. But when I'm out alone, I've been known to push her pretty hard. 😌

@sarabee1995 So the other day I kayaked across the lake with my 12-year-old, and I took her out for a hamburger at a local bar and grill. Much to my chagrin, they mostly play country music. This song came on. I never would have even noticed the song except for your post about it.

For whatever reason, your story keeps sticking with me. Are you more bothered by the lyrics of the song? Or by the fact that he applied it as a label to you? Or something else? Or a mixture of multiple things?

When I play the video, it has the vibes of a good-old-boy down-home wholesome country song, the kind where the world is pretty much perfect in their straight country world. I can appreciate what someone would like about those songs, though I'm never going to resonate with them. Everything about them just feels yuck to me. But don't yuck someone else's yum, right? I can fully accept that for a country boy, that girl is his perfect scenario. I get the sense that she's more attractive to him because she's just concerned with her life (and in the video, her daughter), she's not all about picking up guys. If she's not all about the boys when he tries to hit on her, she's not going to be all about the boys after they get together either. I don't know, I'm assuming. I don't really know how a country boy thinks.

Reminds me of a guy who hit on me in the bar late one Saturday night, ironically the same place as I took my 12-year-old (except that she and I were there much earlier, and we were seated in the dining area, not at the bar). I was out by myself that night, so I welcomed having someone to talk to. But he took our conversation as an indication that I was interested, which I most definitely was not. He also mentioned his political views, which happen to be opposite of mine, and made it clear what he thought about liberals. Needless to say, I did not reciprocate by sharing my views. I did convince him during that conversation that maybe he should consider going back to church. (Hey, I'm me.) I'm not sure how I feel about that conversation in general. I was glad not to sit alone at the bar that night, but yet he made me feel like I never want to go back there by unless I'm with a friend.

But then your situation a few weeks ago. He hits on you and then references the song when you tell him no and turn away. I'm still trying to figure out what he meant by it. Was he trying to save face? Was he referencing the entire lyrical content of the song and implying it applies to you? Was he hoping you would say, "yes," and acknowledge that you were intentionally playing hard to get? Or was it just a little throw-away comment? I'm still confused by his comment. And hearing the song come on the other day made me wonder about it again.

This is one of the few country songs that I like. lol I just don't like the part where the guy is a bit obsessed in the song.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Scribbles Yeah, the song is actually kinda catchy until you listen to the lyrics! 🙄
Scribbles · 36-40, F
I like the parts where it praises a girl for doing her own thing, because I've always been someone who likes to do her own thing and speak her mind...but doing your own thing is ruined when someone is captivated by that and becomes an obsessed audience...when they should bugger off or thinks it's done on purpose "to see how far he'll go" and that's just so wrong.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Scribbles Exactly 100% my thoughts. Every bit.

I also like being someone who does my own thing but the thought that I'm doing that just to play games with some guy's head is just so deeply wrong.

Well now, watching it twice 🤔

He might be “one of those boys” and trade all his world, but he ain't never gettin' “one of those girls” to “hold all night long” yeah.

It's funny that his video, in the process of showing us the “girl”, illustrates exactly why he's never going to grasp the full futility of his dimwitted desire.

He's wrong, somebody stop him, yeah.

@sarabee1995 yeah. I also think alot of guys don't understand a driven attitude in women either.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Scribbles Oh that is so true. I see it everyday in the military. I can place almost every male officer in one of two groups: 1) the military is a meritocracy and the best person for the job always rises to the challenge, 2) women don't belong in the military or in leadership roles.

I lead a group now of about sixty people, officers and enlisted. The majority are here to get the job done and they do their best every single day. There's a few who do not like that I'm in charge.
