Are you one of them girls?

I've officially sublet my apartment for the summer and I'm now living on my boat at a marina in Maryland. With a single-burner stove and a tiny microwave on the boat this means I'm eating out a lot. Well, this past Saturday night I was sitting down to a late dinner at a waterfront lunch/dinner place that turns into a bar at night. It was still relatively early, but the crowd was changing over.

I had finished dinner and was sitting there with a glass of wine enjoying the music and the breeze and watching the boats. He walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to dance. I politely declined.

"Are you one of them girls?" he asked. I recognized the words as a song lyric but couldn't quite remember the rest of the song. He, of course, laughed and I pretended I got the joke and went back to watching the boats and enjoying my wine.

And I made a mental note to Google the lyrics later. Obviously not a top priority, I just got around to Googling them now. The song is by Lee Bryce:
[big]One Of Them Girls[/big]
Song by Lee Brice

Are you one of them girls?
That peels off the Bud-Light label
Just might run a pool table
Roll your eyes if I call you an angel

Ain't you, one of them girls?
Ask you to dance, you say, "No"
Just to see how far I'll go
Your song comes on and your eyes closed
That's when I know, yeah
...
No, dude, believe it or not, sometimes it's not about you. Yes, I'll roll my eyes if you call me angel (or sweetie or baby or just about anything else) because I'm not your angel and rolling my eyes is my way of stopping myself from going all cra-cra on your ass. You do not want to see me go all cra-cra.

I have no interest in seeing how far you'll go, unless you're heading away from me. And yeah, I've gotten pretty good at pool the last couple years and have been known to pick at labels on a bottle or two. None of that has anything to do with wanting to see how far you'll go.

And if my jam does happen to come on and I do get up to dance, please know that that most certainly has nothing to do with you and you'd best stay clear.

My Wife, Mother and I spent the weekend on our boat which is about the same size as yours is.. We have a single burner induction cook cop and a small combination air fry/microwave oven - Galanz (available at Walmart)... Friday night we brought home made chicken soup, did egg noodles and had sliced roast which we warmed up... Saturday... chicken wings and French fries.., Sunday, did a home made hamburger helper type dish on the boat and Monday night - grilled chicken Caesar salad which was awesome.. I did pancakes for breakfast one day, eggs another, I do all the cooking (and the cleaning up afterwards) on the boat.

@pdqsailor1 Okay, okay, fine. The challenge wasn't the limited cooking surfaces available. The challenge was the limited cooking ability of the captain!!! Lol, even in my apartment with full cooking equipment, I couldn't pull off what you just described from your weekend. I suck at cooking (mostly through lack of effort I think).

Btw, you looking for a first mate job? The pay sucks, the accommodations are limited to the couch, and my clothes are kinda hanging everywhere ... but you'd get the joy of rising everyday at 0430 and unlimited sailing!

@sarabee1995 I can teach you how to cook but the prerequisite is that you love to eat good food. My Mother taught me and I then started teaching myself more. My Wife does not cook.. Our galley was a work in progress and I amended (gently upgraded more than modified it) to get more usable space.. and technology changed allowing more function/features. I actually like cooking on the boat more than at home.. I sort of cheat - that roast was made at home and sliced there then frozen so was the chicken soup.. but the rest of it was prepared on the boat. We have a shore locker with a fridge and freezer in it as refrigeration space on a boat is super limited. When you live on board yes you have all the lockers filled and then some... Your boat sounds like a blast to sail... If you make it up to Toronto then you have to come sailing with us, we are on Lake Ontario... You are in the Navy correct? BTW.. I put a Ukrainian flag up my burgee halyard this season... and its going to stay there till the Russians are out of there.

@pdqsailor1 Yes, USN at your service. (At least until January!)

I do love good food and have had many opportunities to eat really well prepared plates. In fact, well prepared food has dramatically changed my impression of seafood. I grew up on Cape Cod and was awash in cheap touristy seafood options. That meant I grew up thinking I didn't like seafood. Now I've experienced really well thought out seafood plates and have fallen in love! 😋

Then you possess the prerequisite to being a good cook Sailor. My Wife eats out of necessity and does not find food to be pleasurable. it is frustrating to ask her how her meal was only to hear "fine"... Food should be a passionate undertaking. I dislike restaurants because there someone else decides how my food is to taste vs when I cook myself I can control the outcome. I taught myself how to make pasta sauces as I love pasta. When I served some to my Mother she said it tasted better than anything else she had tasted and I had to show her how I make it.. That was a high compliment. I got a kitchen aid mixer (two of them actually one at home one in the locker at the club) and I can and do make home made pasta - it only takes a few minutes and fresh is dramatically superior to manufactured... I often start out with an on line recipe and the first time or two its mediocre and then a few tweaks later... I make my own Caesar salad dressings now.. You learn the flavours that you prefer... I built my own pot to make chicken soup... a large stock pot with a valve fitted at the bottom of it... so when the hot soup is done I transfer it via that valve to plastic containers and all the fat ends up in the last container - no ladles involved and it goes from start to cleaned up in three hours... quick and tidy.

@pdqsailor1 That all sounds great, but one must have the time for such endeavors and right now I don't. Maybe someday.

How old were you when you decided to become a self made chef?

@sarabee1995 I guess I was in my teens where I learned from my Mother in her Kitchen... but it got serious after we were married as my Wife did not have a CLUE as to how to cook and so if we wanted to eat it fell to me so I would be calling my Mother asking how do I do this or that.. and I would write the steps on an index card.. I mean basics like how to cook rice.. and it evolved because honestly I had no choice... Then. I found out I could be good at it.. It was like some of the skills I developed on the boat.. sewing, plumbing, engine mechanics, electrical installations both AC and DC, electronic installations, refrigeration/air conditioning, cabinetmaking, rigging, over time I got skilled at a wide variety of tasks not just competence I actually got pretty good at these things... I just sewed new interior cushions... Tomorrow I will set the menu for the weekend on the boat and go shopping.. and I have to do a good job of it because our club is on an island so if I forget anything that would make for a problem.
