what do you think about Frank zappa's music ?

I had never really been into his music, only occasionally listening to to watermelon on easter hay, which is not typical of his style, but last night i had a musical epiphany and I sudenly realized he's a total genius [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmcYTShN4Fk]

Wicked sense of humor and always had great musicians on his records and live shows
helenS · 36-40, F
@JohnnyNoir My favorite FZ album is "The Grand Wazzoo", a fantastic big band jazz/rock fusion album.
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
@helenS I'd be hard pressed to name a single favorite record. I like his mid to late 70s work the best.
jackson55 · M
@helenS H, check out Zappa’s Yellow Shark album sometime.
Justme22 · M
My brother used to play Montana on repeat when I was growing up. It is etched into my brain.
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@Justme22 everytime someone even says "montana" I start singing about dental floss.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Doomflower wana become a dental floss tycoon?
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@reflectingmonkey raise me up a whole crop!
MrGomco · 36-40, M
I love that music, my favourite album is Apostrophe, and I really like yellow snow.
Doomflower · 36-40, M
I love his music AND we were both born on dec 21st
redredred · M
Yes he was, an absolute genius on the guitar.
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
🤔....I was never into Frank Zappa......but many of my high school friends were.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Jimmy2016 you're lucky to have seen them before Roger waters left, I saw the 1989 (I think) .
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
@reflectingmonkey Yes I am!!! I saw them the first time in 1975 in high school and I did see them again on the 1989 tour and almost saw them on the 1994 tour. I've seen Roger Waters in 2008 and 2018. I would like to see a David Gilmour tour, if he ever comes here.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Jimmy2016 i love pink floyd, I think The Wall might be the greatest musical work in the history of mankind. its good from beggining to end, all the songs connect to each other like a multifaceted psychoanalysis of one man called Pink Floyd. pure genius.
firefall · 61-69, M
He is, or was (?)

Much of what he did I dont really connect with emotionally, but I can admire the genius of it intellectually.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@firefall yes, its a very intelectual music, the matematical part of my brain going wild when i listen to his music but its not a very emotional music, lyrics are absurd and the music is very complex.

Great composer and guitarist. I saw him live, about 1970. Funny, as well.

JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
@graphite I just had that song in my head as I was replying to a comment. Just the title Sheik Yerbouti still makes me laugh
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@graphite " Got a job doing radio promo and none of the jocks can even tell i'm a homo"
Jill1990 · 31-35, F
Moving to Montana
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Jill1990 wana go grow some dental floss in Montana? become dental floss tycoons? 😂🤣
Nanoose · 61-69, M
I like it. I think my favorite song is Dinah-moe Humm. Years ago the American government tried to ban some of his songs because they claimed they were obscene. But Zappa fought them in court and the things he said in his defence were brilliant and he won. Cheers!

The Master.

Funnily I hadn’t listened to his music in a while(was obsessed in high school) and was going through my favorites of his last night
Probably around the same time

He’s still amazing
Abstraction · 61-69, M
A bit zany and jazz for my tastes. There was one album years ago I appreciated after a few listens. Can't recall which one. But the mood doesn't take me anywhere I want to go.
romper69 · 51-55, M
I like the album Hot Rats. The rest of his stuff I've heard, about 10-15 albums, I found boring, and unfunny when I think he was trying to be.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
Absolutely Brilliant!

Anyone (Frank) who could shut up Tipper Gore and her stupid PMRC's Puritanical Censorship was simply awesome, not that it did any good!
Madgirl · 26-30, F
i like him as a person more then the music he did...
Madgirl · 26-30, F
@jackson55 moon unit ?
@Madgirl @jackson55 and Ahmet and Diva.
jackson55 · M
@Madgirl Quite a name for a girl or anybody else.
jackson55 · M

Love it. I am STILL trying to play the 2nd verse of Keep It Greasy, which is in 21/16!
Azlotto · M
He was a very talented guy, but I never did care much for his music.
SW-User
He plays music with Billy over on the Mountain
Agreed. He was an absolute genius.
