Do you like Simon and Garfunkel?

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3LFML_pxlY]
I love their music. Simon is a very talented songwriter and Art is a gifted singer who can put an incredible amount of expression and emotion into his voice. I like not only their songs themselves, but also the message behind them. For example their artistic protest against the Vietnam war which they express in their song 7 o'clock news/Silent Night, or the criticism of our way of dealing with each other which they express in "Sound of silence". That´s one of my all time favorite songs that I absolutely love, because for me it is intelligent poetry that conveys a thoughtful message without being intrusive or a raised forefinger. The song uses the imagery of light and darkness to show how people's ignorance and apathy destroys their ability to communicate even on simple levels. Its theme is man's inability to communicate with others. There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication... "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out to another in fear of disturbing the sound of silence. Even the poets (who is mentioned at the end of the song) attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). I interpret these words as a warning: when meaningful communication fails to appear, the only sound that will remain is silence.

Their songs are still current and often played on the radio, another proof of the fact that good music never grows old.

@RobinPhoenix Mein kleiner Bruder loves the same music that I do, too. When "Sounds of Silence" came out, I was in the high school girls' choir. We did it as a performance on our auditorium stage fuer an assortmnent of people in the audience. Our director was a talented man who helped to present it...at the very end of the song, the lights went out(briefly) und then back again. The audience loved it.
@MaryJanine That sounds wonderful. I especially like that the light was used creatively at the end of the song, I can imagine what a great effect that had.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@RobinPhoenix I think you are right, as I recall it(1969-1970).The audience was stunned as the lights went out, then back on again. Then applause, long und loud.

Mr. Sterlin was a smart und creative instructor who could set a current presentation to a popular song. He had a sister who was in high school (the baby)at the same time I was, but she wasn't in our choir (different schools). In 1971-1972, her choir was in competition against ours in All-City Competition. Mr. Sterlin was in an auto accident that day, and you weren't allowed onstage without your director present. He arrived, pale but composed, a little late, und we went on stage. Robin's instructor never got there, und she didn't make it on stage. Guess who won the competition?

Yes. I grew up with them.

The Boxer, Homeward Bound, and America were all beautiful. I like them....but Dylan was better.

I was kidding. Elon Musk gave us all faster internet over here.@HairbrushDiva
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Colormegone I've heard of this Elon Musk guy but I don't know about him.

FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
Yes they were a good duo
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Love their music
JP1119 · 36-40, M
Yeah, they were pretty great! One of my favorites that made it onto one of their greatest hits albums that I nevertheless never hear people talk about is “The Dangling Conversation”.
Littlejon76 · 46-50, M
When it came down to it Garfunkel had an amazing voice, but Simon wrote the songs....and he was a hell of a songwriter.
Littlejon76 · 46-50, M
When they got together for the concert in Central Park they made history. I have that on vinyl and it’s such an amazing concert.@Littlejon76
UpForItNow · 22-25, F
I do very much, over the last 35 years, and have seen both of them perform both solo and together, read all the books.

@TheLastWord I've heard them all. It was "The Boxer" that inspired this question.
Littlejon76 · 46-50, M
Blood on the tracks is a masterpiece.
Colormegone · 70-79, M
Isn’t this a Bob Dylan thread? Lol@HairbrushDiva
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Colormegone Please read the main question again. It says "Do you like Simon and Garfunkel?". I did not originally mention Bob Dylan in it, that was Littlejon76 in his answer to my question. I don't know what you are thinking of.
Colormegone · 70-79, M
I said lol. @HairbrushDiva

@HairbrushDiva yes it was a cover of the julie felix song from 1970
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@smiler2012 I don't think I've heard that version. I thought it was Simon and Garfunkel's own song, that's the version they always play on the radio.
ravenhill · M
of course, they were a classic duo, scarborough fair was a favourite of mine.

I love Simon & Garfunkel.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@chrisCA I hear them quite a lot on the radio. "The Boxer" has been on today. I have heard it before.
chrisCA · M
@HairbrushDiva I love the horn section on this song.

Some were good songs, others were no good.
TheBannibalOne · 61-69, M
@HairbrushDiva Fighting Mad was one.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@TheBannibalOne I don't think I've heard it.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@HairbrushDiva Ask my old music teacher. "The Sounds of Silence" has to be done in a certain key and just the right way to sound good. Our choir did it, and we got rave reviews from inside and outside SHS.
Littlejon76 · 46-50, M
Many artists had fall outs. McCartney and Lennon did.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Littlejon76 That's a well-known fact, but how is it answering the main question? I think I can see what's happening. Your comments are landing in the wrong place. You must be pressing the wrong key when you reply.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Simon, yes. Garwho now? 😂
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
@chrisCA True, but he basically vanished when Paul did his own thing.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@chrisCA That he did.."For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" proves that his voice was so unique at the time!!
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@chrisCA "He is just a poor boy, and his story seldom told..."
Human1000 · 51-55, M
Garfunkel refused to sing "Bridge over Troubled Water" with Simon in the room. They had a very competitive relationship. However, their voices together were amazing, and Garfunkel on "Bridge" created one of the great vocals of this or any other time.
@HairbrushDiva Paul agreed without discussing it with Art.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@LamontCranston So it was mainly the record company owner, and Paul as well. They should both have let Artie have his say.
@HairbrushDiva Later on Paul was jealous when Art took time off to make the film, "Carnal Knowledge". There was "always something"
caesar7 · 61-69, M
Yes, of course!
caesar7 · 61-69, M
Paul is a brilliant composer and writer but when it comes to singing, they are both very distinct! But, Art's voice...it is so unusual like for example Gordon Downey of the Tragically Hip or Ozzy. You know when Art sings if you are familiar with it.
