I would get a relatively inexpensive digital piano. They have weighted or semi-weighted keys, 88 notes, they sound great, and don’t take up much space. They can also use headphones , or internal speakers. Brands I would consider would be Williams, Korg, Casio, Yamaha, or Roland.
We have both, a piano and an electric keyboard. The piano hardly ever gets played, as you can play around so much with the keyboard. Record, add a drum beat, change the sounds for kids to play with.
However, the piano still sounds much better.
Learning on a keyboard would be easier, and if it is something you enjoy, then look for a piano.

About a year ago, I asked a recently graduated music major about that. He said modern velocity sensitive keyboards have something pretty close to the feel and sound of a real piano. Additional advantage: you can send the sound to headphones only, so nobody else has to hear your mistakes.
He said the budget brand is Yamaha, and they can be set up with three pedals like a piano. Other brands are good too. Look over the comments on this search: reddit good electric piano

I don't have a real answer, but what comes to mind is a couple considerations. A real piano is very big and heavy and expensive and would be like moving furniture into the house. A real piano cannot be turned off so if you wanna play at night, you'd want a keyboard. Many keyboards do not have weighted keys, and playing a real piano requires more physical effort in your fingers on the keys than most keyboards. So if you're getting a keyboard in order to learn to play a real piano, you would want to get a keyboard with weighted keys so that there's less of a difference between that and playing a real piano.

A keyboard has the advantage of fitting in the back of the closet when you give up on it, but can be pricy depending on the quality.
You can find free pianos pretty easy, but as you’re trying to move it back out again, you’ll realize why it was free 🤷♂

I would recommend a keyboard before you get anything big.

Get one of those keyboards you put on the floor and step on to play it.
