They've been mocking it since episode 1. It's just with the last season that the people they are mocking have finally realized they are the butt of the joke. And those people aren't happy. They gave the current season the lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes that they could, and I'm laughing my head off at them.

I think it mocked not only the American society but also other societies too.They are bold enough to show how common people are manipulated by people in power and how pathetic we're to fall for it.As you've said it's either you love or hate kind of show.
@SW-User I don’t know, most of the behaviour is mocking only happens in the US. There’s no European nations were political personality cults are a thing.
@tenente I love it, because I have grown sick of the whole superhero genre. Marvel in particular has been shoving superheroes down everybody's throats in the same way that the Vought corporation does in the show.
@LordShadowfire agreed! also, thanks to Disney / Marvel, it seems like other movie studios these days are playing it safe and sticking to the same old superhero blockbusters. they’re so addicted to cheap special effects, garbage script and shallow characters that they're afraid to venture out of their comfort zone and try something new
