It is the old school classy woman thing. Unlike the younger generation that says we are dating or friends with benefits. And it is embarring to say I am how he broke his hip or threw my back out. And definitely not bumping uglies, but more like slow rolling! OOPS

A lot of people, when they are older, value their autonomy and really don't want to be part of a "couple" in the traditional sense.

I think the word "friend" rather than "boyfriend/girlfriend" is an attempt to communicate that.

I have known both older men and older women to talk this way.

@DrWatson Interesting

My one Grandma out lived my Grandpa by ~ 18 yrs. If she ever gave another man the time of day, none of us knew it. I'm sure that is how she would have described him if she did.
I guess it’s kind of a privacy issue. And perhaps it’s just me, but at this age calling someone my "boyfriend" feels silly. On the other hand, my best friend has been seeing someone for a few years, now.

They’re both single, but he’s considerably younger and she insists he’s just fun, not "marriage material". One day her brother referred to the guy as her "lover" and she facepalmed. 😆

@bijouxbroussard Boyfriend and Girlfriend I think are pretty much established verbage for partners. There's no particular better synonym for the term that I know of.
@Vin53 I’m just saying, a lot of seniors in my circle make fun of that term.

I had a great-aunt who never married but lived with her female best friend for almost 70 years. Just saying.
@Harmonium1923
If you know, you know!
@Harmonium1923 I had a great-aunt like that. In fact, I referred to both her and her "roommate" as my great-aunts, Miss Blanche and Miss Gerri.

They lived in an in-law apartment on the property of my mother’s sister, Tante Juliette and her husband. As a child I once noticed that while they had two bedrooms in their flat, only one appeared slept in. In private I asked Mom about it.

"Now that’s ‘nunya bizness’" she said, but she smiled. 😅

That`s what my mother in law did.
