A guy I work with told me " The Shining " is the most over rated horror movie of all time ?

Would you agree with that? It's not the best I've ever watched but a decent horror
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
Maybe. It's an unconventional horror movie that borders on flat-out weird sometimes, but when you consider the pure constant tension and painfully slow descent in to madness, I think it stands up as a lasting entry in the horror field.

It does borrow a lot of elements from other horror movies of that era, so it's not quite unique enough to stand a head above anyone else, but the stress and powerlessness of being in that situation I think is captured excellently. The directing alone is worthy of being highly rated

Has he read about all the symbolism in the movie?

I like it. Has a building sense of dread and a wonderful feel of being totally isolated. It's a great watch on a cold snowy night.

I enjoyed it, but I read the book first Like most movies, it wasn't as good as the book in my opinion.

It'a suspense not horror. Only one got offed.

NOBODY could create an ominous atmosphere like Kubrick

I disagree

"Overrated" is just another word for "I didn't like it/didn't get it". I've heard dozens of people who say they like the book better, but to me, a film is always a different experience than a book. I've read the book, so I understand the criticism, and yet, Stanley Kubrick kicked ass with this film. The images stay burned into your mind. And it means nothing now, but those shots following Danny on the Big Wheel were among the first use of a Steadicam, which enabled those big, bulky Panaflex cameras to glide along with the action.

I think it's rated just fine.

@uncalled4 No, sometimes overrated means just that, that it's overrated, or overhyped. It doesn't mean the person " didn't get it " lol
It's a good movie btw. But not the best I've watched though but certainly creepy in parts
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@StormChaser800 Sure it does. "Overrated" or "overhyped" is the essence of a diss. I'm tired of the "over/under" bit. It's really all opinion. Rate it yourself...what did you think? All one does with the "over"s is say "some people liked it a lot, but I don't" and draw comparisons with other opinions.

It's definitely a good movie, but as a horror movie it's not really that scary IMO. It's also just a little bit too long.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
The movie is okay, but it holds nothing against the book.
LordShadowfire · 46-50
@basilfawlty89 Did you see the miniseries? They kept it pretty faithful to the book, but it still managed to be less scary.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@LordShadowfire yeah, but that's cause Mick Garris can't direct worth shit and because it was PG-13.
LordShadowfire · 46-50
Stephen King would agree, but I wouldn't.
strongbow · 46-50, M
It is overrated
