Watch the original.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Thevy29 I have. It is a favorite. In fact, I bought the entire series on DVD. No one will ever come close to Martin Clunes as Doc Martin. They should have left well enough alone.

Are there any remakes that were worth the effort? My impression is that most US remakes of UK television series remove a lot of what makes them funny in the UK for fear of offending people in the US.
But I watch so few such things that I only have second or third hand reports of it.
Generally I'm of the opinion that trying to replicate a success is usually a doomed effort and that the money, etc., should be spent on creating one's own success.

@ChipmunkErnie I didn't realize those were remakes!
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@LadyBronte I'm sure there are more that I can't remember.

@ninalanyon Also of course tastes in humour vary from country to country anyway, even before everyone loses their sense of humour and goes in for vicarious offence-taking.
I'm not sure which is worse: a different country making its own version based on its own culture, or those who parody long-standing works by "re-imagining" them... I take that concocted verb to admit lacking the imagination to be original.

I love Doc Martin, and watch it every week. Haven't seen the remake and I doubt that I'll watch. I agree, not everything needs a reboot.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@DreamyCrush This one definitely didn't!

I mainly enjoyed it, particularly for the Cornish scenery, I like Clunes and have also watched some of his documentaries. Sometimes I thought Doc Martin could get a little hokey at times, or two of the characters (Bert Large, Sally Tishell) would just get on my nerves and I would have liked for them to have perhaps created less annoying characters
Plus short length of UK series (typically less than 10 episodes per season) and then sometimes more than one year passing between seasons was annoying compared to a US prime time network series with 20-22 episodes per season ... I assume this abbreviated UK series cadence is what Netflix has chosen to copy for its own series

@ThirstenHowl Yes, the scenery was amazing. In fact, I would like to visit that area one day! I enjoyed the quirky characters, even Large and Tishell. They just fit with the other group of eclectics. I wasn't a fan of the year span between seasons either but the end product was worth it for me.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
loved doc Martin - martin clunes is excellent
loved the crazy characters too.
I'll have to try Best Medicine but suspect I'll be disappointed.

@Pretzel If you love the original, I too, suspect you'll be disappointed.

I’ve been watching Best Medicine but never saw Doc Martin. I’ve been trying to like this show but I’m pretty close to giving up. They went too far with the absurd.

I enjoyed it, Martin Clunes played his part brilliantly and effortlessly.
Good old fashioned easy viewing and escapism.

@RodneyTrotter1 I agree! Clunes is fantastic!
H1raeth · 36-40, M
I think my Mum watched that 🤔
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@H1raeth It is a good one!
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Yes. Great show!
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@JimboSaturn Yes! It is!
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Not seen it in a few years, but when it first came out loved it.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@ChipmunkErnie It was such a good show.
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
100% they need to leave it alone. It's a really good series 👍
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@PatientlyWaiting25 Agreed!
onewithshoes · 26-30, F
It was a good series.😉 Remakes are always a disappointment. 🙄
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@onewithshoes Yep.
Just another example of copying UK programming. But then, didn't the UK make a version of the French show "Astrid"?
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@VeronicaJane I don't know. I am not familiar with the show Astrid.
@LadyBronte its very interesting, about a detective, making friends with a young woman with ADHD, solving crimes. The young woman picks up on clues that others totally miss.
LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@VeronicaJane I will look for it. Thanks. Sounds like the female version of Monk.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
Did you know that town in Cornwall is being innneudated full of tourist and driving them nuts? lol
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@VeronicaJane No way! Those shows do make we want to go there lol. Shetland would be interesting too.
ThirstenHowl · M
@JimboSaturn I get the impression that pretty much all of Cornwall or at least the coast is pretty regularly inundated with tourists and traffic and high costs because everyone, even Britons, would prefer to live there rather than the other English counties (and many rich Britons do seem to have a ton of second homes there) ... I think people loved Cornwall before Doc Martin was even a thing
Makes the French equivalent of Brittany potentially more appealing (curiously, both have a St Michael's Mount, so to speak)
There's also at least one pleasant movie, Fisherman's Friends, also filmed in Port Isaac

@ThirstenHowl Yes it was a vacation spot since Victorian times I'm sure.
