Have you ever watched a silent movie

enjoyed it and would watch it again?
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I have watched many silent films. Like talkies, I find some are great, some are ok, and some are bad.

I think the only ones I have seen more than once are "Phantom of the Opera", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (both with Lon Chaney Sr.), "Jekyll and Hyde" with John Barrymore, and "The Mark of Zorro" with Douglas Fairbanks senior.

One that I highly recommend, and which I definitely will watch again, is "The Last Command", from the very end of the silent era, 1928. It features William Powell (who later went on to the Thin Man movies) in the major supporting role. When we were finished watching it, my wife commented, "Wow. I sometimes forgot that we were watching a silent movie!"

@rinkydinkydoink "The Last Command" was Powell's break-through movie. He had had only small roles up till then. So if nothing else, you would probably find the movie interesting for that reason!
@DrWatson

I'll be looking for it - thanks :D (Emil Jannings, too :D )

I've posted this before but, to me, this scene with Myrna Loy epitomizes his sophisticated comedic talent:

@rinkydinkydoink The two of them were quite a team.

Metropolis, The Man Who Laughs, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Mystic, Nosferatu, The Unholy Three (and several other Lon Chaney films).
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@JSul3 I have not seen Metropolis (oddly enough) or the Mystic. I've seen the others on your list. I love Lon Chaney movies.
JSul3 · 70-79
@DrWatson The Mystic is a Tod Browning film that is included in the recent Freaks release celebrating him.

I love silent movies. One of my favorites is The Hunchback of Notre Dame starring Lon Chaney
@BarbossasHusband

That man could steal a scene like almost no other...
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
@rinkydinkydoink That's no lie
I’m a big Buster Keaton fan. Brilliantly directed his own movies. "The General" is often seen as his best.
@BlueSkyKing

He could easily have been killed in many of his movies - - he worked with a broken neck for years without realizing it. One tough son-of-a-gun that guy!

Here's the scene what done it -

Oh yeah love them
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Many times, many movies. And they're not actually silent -- they have musical scores, anything from just an organ or piano to a full orchestra, and some had sound effects to go with the music.
@ChipmunkErnie

Yes :D

Like Don Juan (1926):

I have. It was Cat and Canary. Not the Bob hope one- that is good to.

I liked it. I was in a mood for a haunted house/ mansion movie
@Bignakedguy

Holy Cr_p I have that - - (the Laura La Plante/Creighton Hale one). Prob the Hope one, too (though he ain't my favorite - can't ever remember laughing at anything he ever did or said)
@Bignakedguy

I started the movie but I think it's a movie critique of the original because someone is discussing it while it's playing.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
Dagnabit, you little whippersnapper, I'll show you a silent movie. Now shut your yappin' and get me a bran muffin and some Metamucil before I turn on the hose!
@hunkalove

Btw, one of your comments is urgently needed here - - - - - - https://similarworlds.com/movies/tv-shows/5161613-have-you-seen-hannah-montana-good-luck-charlie-best-of-luck
I remember seeing The Artist and enjoying it.
@OlderSometimesWiser

@bookerdana

Sometimes hitting Watch on YouTube works - sometimes not. I just copy the url then go to YouTube.

Modern Times, right? Great great movie :D
bookerdana · M
@rinkydinkydoink Its a part of Modern Times,Charlie Chaplin on Cocaine but I saw the whole film,funny as hell
AngelUnforgiven · 46-50, F
I have a low attention span and get bored easily.
@AngelUnforgiven

I have the same problem and it's only gotten worse with age. The one I watched last night - for whatever reason - kept me involved. The acting was "of its era" but the commentary before and after the movie (TCM aired the 1926 version of Lillian Gish in The Scarlet Letter - she was the kind old lady in The Night of the Hunter released in 1955) helped a lot.
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
They should use subtitles
@LunarOrbit

Yep. Last night (Sunday Nov 24) I watched The Scarlet Letter (1926 silent) on TCM. Found out after the airing that the male lead only spoke Swedish, the lead actress only spoke English.

No. The once was enough. 🙂
@Colonelmustardseed

They're not for everyone, yep. For example, I could never watch anything CGI (going by previews).
@rinkydinkydoink Most of those are a one-watch only too.
@Secretsmile

Mel Brooks made one - - maybe you'd like that?
@rinkydinkydoink with Marty Feldman and Dom Deluise. Silly funny.
@BlueSkyKing

Oh man - how could the movie fail with those two in it!
