My mom loved the show and books. I remember telling her about how it later came out that those stories are the nice safe almost fairytale like versions of what are much darker real life stories.

@shakemeup I'm sure of it. Laura Ingalls Wilder had to think about what would sell to the general public, and what they wouldn't want to know.

@LordShadowfire her original autobiography didn't sell so she turned her childhood into children's books and that is what took off. The original autobiography was in a museum and was finally published a few years ago, I think. I read a little bit of it then. Rather grim childhood.

@shakemeup Exactly. Then, as now, the truth needed to be improved based on what was selling.

My daughter loved that series. And the boy loved reading the books. I would talk to him about how there were times were very rough for families back then. If they had anything to cook for a meal they were fortunate and nobody complained about what they were eating.

I visited so many of the historical sites from those books growing up. My mom was obsessed. 😮💨
@thepreposterouspanda oh wow, that's so cool

I remember that show. Mom used to read me the books it was based on.

@AbsolutelyFabulous ehh I figured, let them enjoy their debate. 😄
You already know though, if that show were rehashed, all the kids would be fighting on social media.

@AbsolutelyFabulous Well that's a start.

@Allelse there was one episode where a girl was raped but it didn’t show it or say those words. She had walked home, Maybe from school through the woods and she’d heard like branches on the ground breaking and someone was behind her or walking up towards her and I think she might’ve screamed. The next thing I remember is she went home and she was in pretty bad shape and her dad was there and he knew instantly what happened to her and then he said something like we’ll tell everybody that your husband died
