The villain who detaches me off the storyline

Why in the hell would anyone lick the blade of their weapon? I mean, in reality if I'm about to be attacked by someone who does this, I'll feel a bit of ease/hope in anticipation that they hurt themselves or I'll just do my counter attack at that moment hoping that they startle and cut their own tongue.

At that point of the movie, my mind goes astray thinking of all the mentioned above and I'm totally detached, and might even miss the scene events.

I'm sure the majority are mesmerized by such scene but that's just a result of falling for the stereotype Hollywood villain persona.

Food and sex are the big pleasure centers for most people. Licking the blade is metaphorical to those and serves as a means of showing that the killer enjoys what they are doing in the same way they would enjoy a sexual act or a fine meal (depending on the style of lick presented).

It's overuse is because it is such an easy way to communicate that narrative aspect.

That is a curious thing to ponder on. Would be fun to ask the authors themselves.

But as a reader and writer, it is an act that would show the character's thinking is not normal. It is an enhancement to his/her concept so audience/readers would accept 'Ah. So he is deranged. So I can expect more weird things from him.' and be enamoured. Something like that.

Totally makes sense but because it's used with almost 100% of all villains with blades, it kinda lost its meaning to me. I believe i had the feeling and impression you point to on the first time I've seen such act, but now...no.
thats just poor hygiene!
