@originnone Thanks for best answer. I loved that guy, so funny 🤣
@SW-User he's the only one who was the same from the movie through the end of series. I'd forgotten about that.

@dirge Nope. RADAR wasn't in the last 3 seasons. He was the only character to be played by the same actor in the movie and the series. A handful of characters were in the entire series, but Radar wasn't one of them.

@1pebbles I could make a case for Radar.
@originnone But Radar wasn't in all the series

Colonel Flagg 😜
@NorthernBear He was hilarious.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
@NorthernBear If we had more men like him, we’d have less men like him 😂

The main male character would have to be Hawkeye.
The main female character would have to be Hot Lips.

It was Hawkeye. Alan Alda WAS M.A.S.H.
Without him, the show wouldn't have existed.
The oilman on a lumbering locomotive, Radar kept the camp running.
And somehow, found small but incredibly meaningful ways to lift their spirits. Like an only son, he was adored by the 4077th.

I think Maxwell Q. Klinger takes second place though.
His antics and ongoing Section 8's were featured regularly, and provided convenient material to play off of.

Peeking behind the brocade and pearls, though, was found a warm, quietly compassionate man.
Who openly expressed what many others couldn't : a love and longing to return to the simple things of home.

I think most of it revolved around Hawkeye.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
I would agree. Sadly for me the character ran thin very early in the show and was only rescued by the changing of the other starring characters.

@hippyjoe1955 tough call though. they were both great. I thought bj being married made it interesting.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@originnone When the show first came out all the characters were almost cartoonish. As the years progressed the replacement characters became much more realistic. Sadly the Hawkeye character remained cartoonish. Not a bad show but certainly not a great one in my opinion. Other's opinions may differ.

@hippyjoe1955 I really loved Hawkeye throughout the series, and I think Allan Alda was perfect. To me, Trapper John was a little too much like Hawkeye. I never thought of what you said about "cartoonish" but it's true.

The only person on the show for all of it! I don't believe there was a TV episode without him.

Even Radar was replaced with Klinger who also wasn't always in all episodes.
I was watching Three's Company when Mash was on.
originnone · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat I was that way with Happy Days. I never saw it because I watched Good Times.
@originnone I watched that later as a rerun. I liked it too.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Hawkeye. His character was the most often at the center of the story.

Hawkeye followed by Radar...

@bijouxbroussard the definitive answer, but I think Radar is close.
@originnone I know Radar was popular, but there were three more seasons after he left. Hawkeye was there all eleven seasons.
Gary Burghoff was the only cast member from the tv show who had also appeared in the original movie.
