I never really wondered or cared, but upon watching the movie again the other day, it looks to me like Han fires, his shot kills Greedo who then fires spasmodically and way off. If Greedo fired first, he has pretty piss poor aim. Is this even intended as a serious sci fi dork question when someone asks it?

In the 1977 original version, Han shot Greedo. Greedo never fired his gun. In the remastered high definition release of the movie, a blaster bolt from Greedo's weapon was added to the scene to show that Greedo shot first and Han retaliated. George Lucas said that he had intended Greedo to have shot first the entire time but had overlooked the need to add an animation of Greedo's gun discharging.
