I just saw a film trailer with a disclaimer that said “only in theaters” at the end

Strange times we’re living in for movies. With so many streaming services releasing films exclusively on their platforms, it’s hard to believe seeing trailers without any disclaimer on where they can be watched, because it was obvious you had go to the theaters to see them, might be a thing of the past now. We may very well be witnessing the beginning of the end for movie theaters! Think about it: what if streaming new movies becomes so much more convenient, why would anyone want to pay for theater tickets that might cost more than what they’re paying monthly?

Considering all the drama surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max, not to mention Netflix, recently, I imagine the whole streaming brand new theater-quality movies exclusively on a streaming service with soon go by the wayside. There's no way a studio is going to make any money releasing a $100 million movie on a streaming service. Smaller films, sure, but at a fraction of the budget. Now that the pandemic appears to be transitioning into just normal stuff, I imagine studios and theaters will get back to being the first location for movies, especially big ones, eventually going to streaming 3 to 6 months later.

Yup. I wouldn't be investing in theaters today. They will join Blockbuster soon.

I don't actually think that's a new phrase. I vaguely remember them using it years ago. I think it was to let people know they would not be able to watch it on TV or video.
