I was watching "The Great Gatsby" recently…

I watched both the 1974 version with Robert Redford, and the 2013 remake starring Leo DiCaprio. I read the book in high school, back around the time the first movie came out.
Both movies were very well done, but the 1974 version hinted, 2013 spelled a lot of it out. 2013 also had some anachronisms that the earlier movie didn’t.

There was a theme throughout the first movie, Irving Berlin’s "What’ll I Do", a beautiful song where Redford and Mia Farrow danced together. This recording is almost 100 years old now, still very haunting:

I read the book first and then saw the first movie. I was so disappointed in the film version I never bothered to see the second movie. That usually happens to me when I see what Hollywood does with literature.
@bowman81 Parts of the 2013 version were truer to the book, but both were probably more the result of screenplay adaptations of the book. Which most movies tend to be, alas.
I’m reading the book again for the first time since highschool, the. I plan to watch the movies, neither of which I’ve seen

I’m curious about the Baz Luhrman one
@Ghostinthemachine I of course would suggest the Redford/Farrow version. (1974 I guess)

I always wondered if that was a good book because I actually liked the short parts I read in school. They tried to have us read it as a project but I never read it since I was hardly at school.
Somehow I still aced the tests though so my teachers never noticed that I wasn't actually reading the books 😂 🤷
@ChiefJustWalks It’s actually a very good book for its time. I liked F.Scott Fitzgerald back then. But I had to keep the art separate from the artist.

@bijouxbroussard The curious question is why? I'm not as fond of the book as you.

There are further anachronisms when your artsy home town decide to host a night in spirit of tourism (Great Gatsby inspired) that only celebrates the celebrity of the small town. They might as well say, by the power invested by the arts community and mayor we support only thee.

Beautiful piece of music. And the audio quality is amazing considering the age of the recording. The video's images are a nice touch too. Thanks for posting this gem.

There is something so special and sweet about unrequited love. Makes you remember it for long!

Not the 1949 version starring Alan Ladd?
@ChipmunkErnie No, but that’s another version for me to look for.

The 2013 version was filmed here in Sydney.

A beautiful song. Poignant.
