Do you ever watch black and white movies? (both)

I find so many of them to be great movies. Not overly complicated, slower than today's frenetic movies.
What are some of your favourite black and white old movies?
Some memorable movies, All about Eve, The Grapes of Wrath, A Streetcar named Desire, On the Waterfront, Judgement at Nuremberg

I'm a sci fi fan from way back. Love the old black and white movies, mainly because they had to rely on plot and dialogue rather than special effects.

@Bushranger That is the reason I love them so much. No hiding behind those "Special Effects"

@Gusman Other than sci fi, the early Hitchcock movies are brilliant. Rope is one of my favourites. Another top movie is 12 Angry Men. Both take place in one setting, virtually no scene changes. Imagine someone trying that today.

@Bushranger Agreed, Hitchcock was a brilliant film maker.
12 Angry Men, in a Court Room/Jury Room. Almost unheard of today.

@Gusman Have you seen Rope? Fantastic movie on so many levels.

@Bushranger Reading up on it, I do not think I have seen it. Might watch it soon.

@Gusman To give an example of what I mean about not having to rely on special effects, compare The Thing From Another World (1951) and The Thing (1982). Both based on the same source (Who Goes There? by John W Campbell Jr), with the latter movie more closely following the source material. However, the first movie has a lot more plot and character development as opposed to the latter movie's reliance on special effects. I'll admit they were good but, to me, they detracted from the story. Now, a movie like Independence Day was all about the effects. Not much of a story (been done so many times before) but I loved the effects and really enjoyed the movie.

@Bushranger Rope was filmed in color...but still a classic (we own it)

@indyjoe Damn, your right. Don't know why I thought it was B&W, but I was sure that it was. I'll admit that it has been about a year since I last saw it. Many thanks for putting me straight on that, but it's still a good movie.

@Bushranger An easy mistake and yes it was a very good film. I don't have anything against color (or even special effects for that matter as long as there is still a good story and they help tell it), but the art of old black and white is often ignored and goes unappreciated in today's world.

@indyjoe Yep. Couldn't agree more.
