I wonder why is this still happening

Why do we hide the fact that we are depressed ? If it is an illness that affects every aspect of our lives why is it considered taboo to acknowledge it in public ?

The problem is, in modern society, if I tell somebody I'm depressed, they tell me to cheer up. Like that's somehow this amazing revelation that I should just be happy. I know I should be happy, but I'm not. So tell me how to do that. No? You're not a therapist? Then shut up.
