Diminished responsibility

Does mental illness and mental disorders cause violence and murder

Why do they get their charges diminished?
WelshLovely · 46-50, F
Mental illnesses can cause delusions and that can be what causes the crime to happen. The charges will be on grounds of diminished responsibility because the perpetrator will be deemed not to have been in their right mind and not fully responsible for their actions. It could actually mean that the perpetrator has a longer sentence and will be kept in a secure hospital rather than a prison, but doesn't necessarily mean they have a comfortable life while there.

@WelshLovely Makes me wonder what percentage of persons with a paraphilia has it for something dangerous or just something weird and embarrassing.

Murderers may have a mental illness but the mentally ill are more likely to be the victim of violence than committing it .

Mental illness may explain a felon's actions but it doesn't/shouldn't absolve them of them.

I notice all those who claim or are found to be mentally impaired are 'known' for the crimes they have committed.
Nobody ever said of the same how 'Wonderful they are with children'. Or "What talent they possess as a gardener/chef/tailor/etc.

The threshold for evidence of mental illness really needs better qualification.

And the starting point for all taking of life should be at least 30 years in my opinion.
