I guess the dementia is progressing faster than I thought.

My wife just woke from a nap and didn’t recognize me for a bit. And wanted to know who else lives in this house. At least she recognized me now but unsure of where she is until she walks around and things become familiar.

I know how you feel. My wife isn't that bad, but I worry because her memory seems to be going more and more and there is a history of dementia in her family.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@ChipmunkErnie This was a major incident as she’s at least been good at recognizing people to this point. It was a little shocking.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@SageWanderer And upsetting, I'm sure. :(
Try coloring books with her and play with legos helps delay dementia
@SageWanderer get coloring books for kids with bigger pictures
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Sydnee I’ll do that but it’s her eye hand coordination that’s the issue.
@SageWanderer oh tough keep trying
1pebbles · 56-60, F
My heart breaks for you as you slowly loose her to the hole in her mind… keep her comfortable, safe, secure
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@1pebbles She’s been having some confusion as to place and time. This was the first time she didn’t recognize me and it was unnerving.
Poppies · 61-69, F
That is scary.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Poppies It was really upsetting today. At least now she seems to be thinking clearer.

My prayers go out to you and your wife.

FWIW, for a bit of insight ...

It does a great job at seeing dementia from the inside out and that in turn helps us better understand how to respond.
My grandmother had difficulties. It is sad, after so many years. Wish I had an answer to help, stimulating recognition of her life is my best thought.
JerseyGal · 51-55, F
I'm sorry for her to have to experience this, and for you watching it develop. 🤗
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@JerseyGal She’s had some confusion at times but this was a major development as far as I’m concerned.
JerseyGal · 51-55, F
@SageWanderer
My prayers are with you both.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
That must be so hard for you.

My wife has mental illness, but her symptoms are not those of dementia.

Is she getting any medical treatment for it?
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@SW-User There isn’t much you can do for it. Small blood vessels in the brain are closing off and restricting flow.

I know there are certain medications that can help with Alzheimer’s disease. So maybe they could be of use in her case, too. It has something to do with neurotransmitters and the likes. Don’t lose hope. @SageWanderer
