I mean.... Encouraging problem solving is a good thing but

I don't understand the whole mentality of throwing kids in deep end water to teach them how to swim

That happened to my grandma's on both sides of my family and both of them went through the same scenario after that:

1. Nearly drowned
2. Never actually learned to swim
3. Had a life long fear of large bodies of water

----
The concept applies to other things too, not just learning to swim.
But yeah, it was the only analogy I could think of, lol

My mother in law had the exact same traumatic experience as a child ..

And does not feel safe swimming . Instead of loving water the same way I do ,it's just a source of stress for her ..

I didn't get thrown in, but I fell in. My granddad acting calmly and not making a crisis out of a drama turned it into a positive learning experience.

Old school .... they believed that it's natural to be able to swim so your instincts would kick in and you world swim ... i jumped in on my own & swam ... they thought i was part fish
