Should I talk to my store manager about my substance abuse?

I recently posted something else about substance abuse and I appreciate you guys for all the advice. You have no idea how much it means to me.

I am thinking if I talk to my store manager in private with the HR person there I could get options right then and there. Think it’s a good idea? Won’t back fire on me?

I had this problem, and I didn't say anything to my employer. Some employers will likely see you as a liability, rather than a friend who they'd like to help. It depends on your employer, though. Some offer help for substance abuse problems, whereas others will just want to terminate you.

@Lykos Sad irony is that it is the secrecy and shame in addiction that keeps people from getting the help that they need. Too bad employers don’t see it that way.

Always risk. But most of the time honesty pays off and they will help you get what help you need.

@Confined what planet are you from?

@pedrohedgerow I know a nurse that got addicted to drugs. Her employer gave her medical leave.
My job will allow a medical leave but you have to allow them access to the medical records.
When i worked for a cell phone company if you were honest up front they would put you on medical leave. If they found out in other ways it was immediate termination.
Depends on the company.
Otherwise you can take a leave of absence.

Well you could be covered under medical rights laws if you need to go into rehab. I guess it depends on where you work and how scared they are of lawsuits.
Engage a professional doctor first

Do not try DIY HR discussions solo!

@questionWeaver yes it shows you are serious about getting help plus it has become a medical matter and the health & medical law may cover it better this way.
@cherokeepatti well said

I would keep your self to your self and rely on help from others who cannot implode your life.Best wishes.

What are the company policies in that regard. A lot of companies offer help to the users. Does yours?

You could get fired

@MrBrownstone ↑ this

I'm thinking that telling your store manager will result in them firing you.
If you have a substance problem, handle it outside of your work place, by seeing a professional.
Maybe if you'd been there for many years and are an asset but otherwise I wouldn't.
No matter what they have given you as a consolation idea. He would probably get fired.

employer here. can confirm: you'll become a liability in their eyes and they'll retaliate. do not recommend. sorry bruh

@tenente exactly, why do people expect to be treated better than they treat people??
tenente · 100+, M
