What TV stations did you have growing up?

We had seven channels living in New York City in the 1950s and 60s. CBS-2, NBC-4, WNEW-5, ABC-7, WOR-9, WPIX-11, and WNET-13.

I grew up in northern New Jersey and we had the exact same station lineup. In fact the broadcast antennas for those stations were probably mostly located in the Jersey Meadowlands.

Interesting fact about NTSC TV channels: the broadcast signals spread beyond their allotted 6MHz spectrum and so they had to space them every other channel. If someone in NYC tried to broadcast on channel 8, it would interfere with 7 & 9.

You'll notice channels 4 & 5 are adjacent, but there was a bigger separation between their allocated spectrums. Also all of FM radio was placed in a large gap between 6 & 7. Some FM radios would pick up TV channel audio at the very end of the dial.

Ancient history; when TV went fully digital, the interference problems were eliminated, allowing many more TV channels on the airwaves. I wouldn't really know though; we get all our channels over cable, hardly ever tune in to the airwaves signal.

I lived in different states. In Missouri in the early 60’s there was ABC, CBS, NBC…am thinking there was PBS but maybe not. All I know what that two of the major stations were pretty good but another one had bad enough reception with a lot of “snow” on the tv screen that it made it frustrating to try to watch anything. Then when I was about 20. I lived in Oklahoma and we got UHF channels, had to use a circular antenna that was screwed into the back of the TV to pick up channels. I really liked those channels finally got some good movies to watch and by then the TV was a color one.
Exact same as you. And my sister and I were the remote controls who got up to change channels and adjust the rabbit ears when the picture was getting staticky. 📺

2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13 on VHF.

I never remembered any UHF channels. There was quite a few UHF channels even back then.

BTW UHF had a separate dial.

BBC1 (1936) and ITA (1955, later called ITV). BBC2, which was on UHF, came in 1964 and required a new set and a different aerial. Channel 4 came in 1982.

@supersnipe Looking at the other responses we seem to have a better grasp of the numbering system in the UK.
I had the same channels growing up in Queens, NY, in the 80s and 90s.
Not many - in Ontario we got WBEN (CBS) Buffalo, WGR (NBC) Buffalo, CBC Toronto and CHCH (Local) Hamilton.
