I think you can self-publish on Amazon for free, or maybe you have to buy a membership and then the actual publishing is free, try to google "self-publish amazon" or something like that, or if you have specific questions write "reddit" after whatever you google, because in my experience the reddit community has a lot of useful knowledge, and it's often quite legit.

It takes a bit of work and don’t expect it to be a best seller but it just takes effort. Whatever you do, do not trust an agency who says they will self publish for you and avoid asking on fb because all you’ll get are scammers. The hardest part of self publishing making sure it’s available. There’s quite a few books that give you a step by step process on how to do it too.

@Captainjackass Are there any books you recommend for her?
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
@SwampFlower well there’s no one single book on it. It also depends on whether you plan to publish an actual book or just ebooks. Most of them are all the same anyways since the subjects the same.

Let her finish the entire book first, complete with editing, formating and appetizing photos of the dishes.
It's a valuable and creative project from which she will learn a great deal.
The latest cookbooks usually carry mini-stories of 150 to 600 words about where the recipe was found or how it developed - something that gives a feeling for the author's experiences, values and approach to cooking.
Once ready for publication, consult writers' blog sites and associations for advice on publishing. There are many online.
Or there are many books on self publishing. Get one that is current.
Take care in choosing the printer. Many companies are now charging rip-off rates and providing extremely poor computerized services that make a mess of the book.
To publish a book, the minimum requirement is three identical copies, registered with an ISBN number.
On the back of the title page the copyright notice should state the author's name, date and place, and should specify the details of the copyright. These can be found, standard, in any book.
One is sent to the ISBN, one to the national or local state library, and one is kept for oneself.
After self publishing, it is up to the author to advertise, distribute and sell the book. There are many ways to do this, but it is extremely hard work.
If her cookbook is really good and proves popular, she might attract a good deal from a high ranking publisher.
I recommend avoiding Amazon at all costs. They rarely keep their contractual obligations and rely on authors being too poor to sue.

you can publish with Barnes and nobles press for free. (but youhave to buy yourself a copy of the book. it tells you how. you need it in a pdf and follow their size guidelines.

Amazon self published for free. The give you an ISBN number that can only be used on their platform. You have to do all the formatting and editing yourself and make your cover.

@AuRevoir Thank you! I actually really appreciate you taking the time to explain the process in so much detail. Definitely gives us a good place to start looking into options.

@SwampFlower It’s a fairly straightforward process. Advertising the book is its own beast. DO NOT use Fiverr for advertising. The advertisers paint pretty words there, but you’re just throwing your money away if you do. Fiverr is good for a lot of things but advertising your book is not one of them. This is coming both from my personal experience and through a book YouTubers, who I only watched after the fact. Who had the money to try and test nearly all of the top advertisers on Fiverr. None of which resulted in any sales.
Amazon charges I think $100 for advertising. And then lets you pick your own bidding algorithm on how you’d like to spend the $100 when advertising your book on their platform. So it’s a live and learn experience but will most likely yield far better results if you use it.
Facebook ads are also known to yield higher success for books. So those are the two platforms you’d want to consider using for advertising books. There are other methods as well such as Reddit ads and X ads… but those seem to vary according to other authors and their experiences, from what I’ve researched.
Amazon also has a tracking feature built into KDP so you can track your sales in real time.
I believe if you do this alongside your niece it will be a great bonding moment of fun as you go through the process together. Aside from formatting all of it is easier than it sounds. Formatting has been the only real issue as aforementioned that I’ve had with making the books.
Oh yes and AI art is accepted. So is AI writing. Amazon only asks that you list it as such for being part of the book.
I’m sure I’m probably forgetting something or other. But just dove into making a free KDP account and you’ll be good to go on creating your book and seeing what it looks like.
Feel free to watch YouTube video tutorials if you get stuck on anything. Or internet searches for any questions you have on it. There’s plenty of people out there who are covering the topics.
