These electric bills in the uk are stressing me out

Why cant u get a straight forward bill? I get estimate readings and i send them my actual readings and they charge me for the estimated readings when i already paid for my readings like wtf?

Should i just get a smart meter? Would that help?
Fluffybull · F
We pay quarterly. I get an email to submit the readings and I submit them. A day or so later I get email with bill and I send a cheque. Our last electricity bill was £106 ☺️
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Fluffybull we are with eon next and we send our readings in every month. They send us a bill and we pay it

Well they charged us an estimate reading from march to August 1st, based on their estimated readings, and deducted what we have paid and the want us to pay the difference but its stupid because we are paying our actual energy usage but it diesnt correspond with the companys estimated amount.

So they could send a meter guy out to check we are telling the truth but instead they want us to pay the difference and over pay. If thats the case why the hell are we providing meter readings and why qre they asking us 5 months later to back pay. I dont get it. Its so sloppy i just dont know if anyone else had this happen. Ive been in the uk over a year but the last place we lived it was prepaid.
Fluffybull · F
@DarkSideoftheMoon Can't you just change to paying quarterly and provide readings every quarter?
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Fluffybull ill ask if we can do that. Someone told us to get a smart meter. That that would be much easier than sending readings and paying more in estimates so we were going to do that but someone said dont do it and didnt say why

Scottish Power tried to charge me £330 a month for Electric and Gas. They said they wouldn't take it when I set my Direct Debit up because they said it was based on the previous tenants. Subsequently they took all that money 2 weeks after setting up the DD.
Anyway the same day I cancelled the DD and then I started giving them Readings. 4 weeks later I get an email saying I we them money even though my account is £270 is credit. So I complained and got the majority of the money back. Now I give them readings, my Heating is switched off and even with me on no deal I paid just £48 for Electric and Gas for 3 weeks useage a few weeks ago.
VirginMatchmaker · 46-50, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon No you can vent s much as you need. The Gas and Electric is ridiculous. The Electric especially because we produce more than enough to cover the country and yet it's gone up it price. What frustrates me is that not half a mile away there is a wind farm so why is my electric bill so high? As for Gas we are the only country within Europe that can store it and we have too much and are struggling to give it away to other countries. So again why is it so high. Petrol is ridiculous too especially when companies share results that their 1/4 year profits are £9bn
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@VirginMatchmaker yeah apparently prices are rising because of we are using or burning too much but i guess its not naturalised anymore so its all profit.
VirginMatchmaker · 46-50, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon exactly, it's disgusting.
Barny52 · 56-60, M
They normally charge on your reading when you send it, smart meter world sort it out for you plus you can watch bills clocking up every day !!
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Barny52 yeah but i got a bill today wanting me to pay the extra difference because my actual readings are less than their estimated ones like wtf!
Barny52 · 56-60, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon im with eon and never had that ! Used to get a email with estimates if that was higher than my reading would send my reading in and just be charged on my reading, at end of day the meter can’t be cheated its a running total. Perhaps the prices have gone up and it down to that ! I’ve never had a problem with smart meter
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Barny52 im with eon next too. We have to call them but i think we will go with yhe smart meter
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Id ring them and ask to speak to someone who can read a bill! They owe you the money. I reckon you spoke to a dimwit! But do go quarterly. You can then manage it a lot better yourself
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Gangstress i feel like all ive been speaking to is idiots when dealing with customer reps 😫

Everything in the UK seems more complicated than necessary. Where I live, Norway, they just bill me for what I have used after I have used it.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Fluffybull They are only making you do what they used to pay visiting meter-readers to do.
SW-User
@ninalanyon same here in the UK you only get an estimated if you haven't put your readings in on time.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Fluffybull essentially i think its our tariff but being from q different country i dont understand how this is all worked out. Im a bit confused because in America they charge us on what we used, not estimates.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Oh it's dumb as hell isn't it. Mine overcharges me even when I give them my readings then sometimes they take it off another bill. They want me to have a month in advance in credit at all times and I'm just like no I'm not doing that. I'm not essentially paying 2 months every time because of muh policy.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Ryannnnnn we are going to call them tomorrow and sort it out. Its ridiculous
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@DarkSideoftheMoon they want double of what we actually used in 5 months
Pfuzylogic · M
Sounds like they are playing it safe at your expense . Has the war in Ukraine caused large increases in the bill?
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Pfuzylogic we went from £1.90 a litre to £1.70 a litre.

Comes out to still almost $10 a gallon if i had to convert it. Stupid expensive 😒

When i get back from maternity leave im transfering my job closer to home and walking to work.
Pfuzylogic · M
@DarkSideoftheMoon
Nice to have work close enough for a commute.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Pfuzylogic yeah its easy to get around without a car where i live, luckily. My husband drives so its not so bad but i can work closer to home.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Shop around for a new provider that offers a better rate, plus have a smart metre installed
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@nedkelly ill 100% do that. Its bullshit. Complete scam
Fairydust · F
Don’t get a smart meter!!
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F

Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon understandable ☹️
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon You must have a electricity ombudsman you can complain to
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@nedkelly yeah we have a civil advice number or something. Its literally on the bill lol explains a lot
