None because we had no telelevision until I was in my late-teens, maybe early-twenties; so saw anyhting onlyon others' TVs.

As for remembering commercials, I never bothered to remember any I saw. Most were shallow and ephemeral, for nothing special.

Only about three particular ones stick in my mind. Two, for alcoholic beverages, were effective by their quiet wit.

One was that for Famous Grouse whisky. I forget its era.. A grouse against a plain white background, walked half-way across the screen then turned to look us straight in the eye. No sound, no music; I forget if there were any words, perhaps only the brand-name displayed.

The second was for a beer, I forget which. It showed a man ostensibly taking the family dog for an innocent late-evening walk. We follow, to see the animal lead its master to the pub where the beverage is clearly the man's "usual"...

Most car ads were rubbish, sometimes worse by depicting the vehicle driven at speed along a wet, sandy beach, or similarly very bad practice. Some were so opaque they did not reveal what was being advertised. The third specific ad I recall was for Renault, showing the car (a Clio?) arriving at an opulent chateau followed by an enthusiastic greeting between the young woman driving it, and her father. The advertising trade itself reputedly had an apocryphal tale that it was inspired by a French "art-house" (= poor-quality, weak and pornographic) film in which Dad unwittingly meets daughter at her work-place... a bordello.

@ArishMell The Clio was the 1990s - quite a long running theme of 'Papa' and 'Nicole'. Apparently inspired by a 1966 film feauring Audrey Hepburn and Hugh Griffith and titled 'How to Steal a Million'.

@supersnipe Thank you!

I think I can now recall having seen the "official" story of its inspiration, but not the film itself, and do believe it.

Though I can also believe the porn film myth circulating within the trade as self-deprecating or rival-company's humour! I'd read of that one in a reviewer's newspaper column.
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@ArishMell I remember the 'Grouse' ! Also there was 'Cointreau', the orange liqueur. This was an obscure product in the 1960s, being advertised in places like the Observer colour supplement ('Cointreaversial indeed!') But then they thought they'd try taking it mass-market. It worked - a textbook success in marketing. They employed a then out-of-work French actor - remember the line 'Orainges ripened under the tropical sun'? - who was a massive success as the 'leading man' in the ad campaign, became known as 'the Cointreau man' and wound up with his own fan club.

The Texaco one with the male attendants dressed in Texaco uniforms singing about how they clean your headlights and windshield, LOL to have that today. I think NJ is the only state still requiring attendants at all! Today I drive an EV so never even stop for gas, so I carry a portable windshield cleaning dispenser and squeegee!

A bit after my childhood but the 'Fairy Liquid' jingle had stayed the same from the 1960s. The food (mainly chocolate) firm Cadbury's obviously had a genius agency. The legendary 'Smash' (the Martians) ad from 1974 is there, as are 'Cadbury's Fruit and Nut(case)' featuring television personality Frank Muir, and 'Cadbury's Whole Nut' (the ad office scenario). People are still peeling potatoes, though.

Already posted but I've just remembered another, and it is among the most famous of British TV ads.

It was for Hovis bread, and shows a boy pushing his bicycle up a very steep street surfaced with setts (not "cobbles", I don't think.) The narration is supposedly by him, in a broad real or theatrical Yorkshire accent, about coming home to tea.

By 'eck, 'e'd 'a' deserved his Hovis-based butties, after that reet long ride to school and back...

The Pennines-looking street is really Gold Hill, in the Dorset town of Shaftesbury, at least two-hundred miles and totally different accent from the nearest bit of Yorkshire.
