I have seen so many people throughout my life who have tried so hard to love people (including me) who can neither return it or understand it. Once you start to play that game, you are losing.
The fault is not yours. It’s actually a sort of ego exercise to think it is. We think, if I love hard enough and long enough, I can fix them. Not true. They can’t be fixed unless they actually want to be fixed, and mostly, they don’t want to be fixed.
You must be feeling confusion, sorrow, guilt and loss.
Put down the trunk of guilt you’ve been carrying. Surround yourself with the love you’ve created, because that’s real. You’re real.

I'm sorry it ended this way, with her never becoming a decent mother, but I know you weren't expecting her to change for the better. From what you've told us, I know that if you are mourning at all, you are mourning the mother you should have had but never did. She didn't know what a good mother is but she probably thought she was one. It's the end of a long sad chapter in your life. Amen.
