What chore did you have as a kid that seems completely ridiculous now?

We lived in a rented farmhouse. It had a lot of land, but as I said, it was rented. Dad, being a frustrated farmer, wanted to keep livestock — goats, sometimes a cow or two. So he rented some land off someone who lived a bit farther down the gravel road our rented farmhouse was on, fenced it in with electric fencing, and put in a few goats.

For reasons I never understood, there was no water available there. We could set up the electric fence on at the house of the person we rented the land from, but couldn't use the water for some reason. So, I had to load up as many gallon milk jugs as I could carry with water, usually six, and haul them the couple of miles to where the goats were kept and water them, sometimes a couple times a day.

@Nimbus not a chance. It was a big luxury when dad bought that huge TV antenna on a mast for the roof with a rotary control sitting on top of the TV.

@Gibbon I see.
You lived on Millionaires Row then? ;)

@Nimbus not really. It was about a $75 investment. And note the word investment. TV was a big thing back then. We were in a lower middle class neighborhood. Everybody had one. The interesting thing is it's the same price today. Unless you go top dollar, which means if you bear inflation, that's one item that's a whole lot cheaper than it was back then. You might have gone with a larger antenna, paid up to $100, but still, the price holds today.
I had a friend who lived in a single mom household. The mom worked hard in IT but gave this poor girl so many chores, after school, that she was practically the maid. It would take her 2 hours or longer to do chores every day, before it was cleaned to her mom's standard. Sweeping the sidewalk every day. Sweeping the kitchen floors, vacuuming. the house, washing down surfaces. I felt sorry for her so I used to help her, then had time to play a bit.

Cranking the crank by hand on the ice cream maker! Once in a great while, when we had company over, my mother would make homemade vanilla ice cream and serve it with macerated strawberries!

Moving the TV aerial to whatever was the best place for reception.

Burning the trash.

@Mrnotsonew I remember doing that at a resort and one time a small propane bottle ended up in the burning barrel and I watched a projectile fly through the air and just miss the owner and his friend
