We didn’t have soda, but maybe it wasn’t as much as what I thought paper towels didn’t matter to me.

Can’t really think of anything. Things have not been good lately due to circumstances.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Jonjdw im sorry to hear that. And believe me I can relate. You don't know how much.

My veggies for sure. I’ve always been a huge fan of veggies as a snack but veggies were always more than chips or cookies because there wasn’t a store brand of the item. Now fresh veggies in my house is a must. That and my Coke 🤣
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@MyMonstersAreReal
Vegetables? Are you kidding? I didn't know of them until I was in the army. Not growing up with them made vegetables strange and gross up me. Never ate them.
It wasnt until the army forced me to eat them they I was like.. hm.. not bad😊

And the coke, of course the Coke! 😊

Thdnk you do much for sharing!!

Lunch money for my kids we couldnt afford lunch tickets so my mom packed my lunch, and we lived in a smaller rural area didnt have the free lunch program
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Baybreeze oh yeah. The not deserving is strong.
I remember being at a school friends house and could have sworn that they were faking it because I was there. No way they were talking to each other without drama or arguing.
Baybreeze · 41-45, F
@CurrentName Exactly. It's like uh am I in a Twilight zone? My friends mom would listen to her for an hour straight, say Baby girl, and praise how my friend was her 'life,' online. I felt like I was in another universe. Like a mom could love you, or laugh or praise you? It's still hard trying to have it absorbed in my mind that that exists 🙁
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Baybreeze oh yeah.. and they were all dressed nice, and had jobs and were really friendly. I was there's no fucking way this people are like that all the time.
I didn’t grow up poor. I struggle to eat without paper towels, someone told me exactly what you said about serviettes the other day. I was like really?
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye
You mean they felt the same way I do about paper towels really?
That means there might be more!!
@CurrentName yeah and it was surprising and humbling because I realise that it was something I never even thought about. They were just there.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye
I understand. I suppose there are things I see the same way while others might not. Good point.

Real tea (loose or bags) versus powdered instant tea. I didn’t know what real hot or iced tea tasted like till I left home. I buy some good quality types of teas now…Earl Grey, Cardamom, Green tea etc.

A variety of herbs and spices to make tasty meals, including ethnic dishes.

Fresh pineapples, kiwi fruit, etc. We had the basic fruits that were in season or very inexpensive…bananas, grapes, apples. But I like to try all types of fruits that we never got…pomegranates included.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@CurrentName Yes I know what you mean. The flavor is horrible compared to the real thing it imitated. I am not tempted at all to drink it or Tang either. If I want something that taste like an orange it’ll be real orange juice or a sweet orange. I even have a good metal juicer now that I can make my own fresh juices and that beats processed anything from a store.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti Oh for sure!!!
But sometimes id be at the supermarket, and id pick up a big thing of Tang. I'm not expecting it to taste like oranges.
It's supposed to taste like TANG.
TANG or a jug of lemonade, doesn't even have a brand. Just says lemonade. That brings me back to where I was a kid riding my bike and there would a thing of cold TANG in the fridge.
I suppose that's the principle behind marketing products to young consumers. Cause you have customer for life.
I'm glad that you are able to drink the kind of tea you like. Thank you for sharing
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@CurrentName When I got away from so many of these additives my taste changed to craving foods and drinks that were authentic. I have a feeling that when we crave fruit-flavored candies and treats that we are really craving the nutrients in the real thing.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
We weren't poor, but I'm the youngest of four girls and never had any new clothes of my own until I left school (and by implication nothing that ever really fitted me). So my luxury is not to budget too tightly when buying clothes.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@SunshineGirl
I really like your answer.
So the clothes went thru three sisters before they got to you!!
And the ill fitting outfits.
You know some people may say, what's the big deal? But for a kid growing and trying to fit in it is a big deal. You know?
I like how you end it. Good for you!!!
Thdnk you for sharing that. Withing the context it's a beautiful story.
We always reused ziplock bags
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@BiasForAction
Yes. I've heard of that!!
But if you think about it that's not too bad of an idea. Fir certain things of course.
We didn't have ziplock bags tho.
The bag was a paper bag and for the "zip lock" you just rolled down the bag opening.

That's a good one.. thank you for sharing .
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@faery
Yeah ☹
Especially as a kid.
That does bring back some pretty bad memories. There's really not much more that can be said about that besides it sucks.
Thank you for sharing that.
faery · F
@CurrentName Yer welcome
LunarOrbit · 61-69, M
We never had soft drinks. Tang was what we drank as kids. We were poor… But my dad always had wine. We were italian and he made literally hundreds of gallons of wine every year. (I didnt realize he was an alcoholic till I was about 40).
mksworld · 51-55, C
Paper towel is still a luxury item.

Baked beans on toast is da bomb btw.

We've never had pay tv like Foxtel or any type of pay per view subscriber streaming service like Netflix.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@mksworld really??
I'm going to have to try that but I hate beans. I ate so much of beans growing up that I terminally refuse to eat them.
I remember decades ago I had to go to one of those food banks things. And when I got there there were nothing but beans. All kinds of beans.
I thought... Well fuck!
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I didn't grow up poor but paper towels for wiping whatever in a household weren't a thing here. I'm not even sure when did we start using them but I still only use them for specific purposes like wiping oil from a pan or anything too dirty to flush into a sink. It logically doesn't make sense to use them to wipe something you can wipe with a washing sponge or a rag. I'd consider it pointlessly wasteful.
Of course, I use thinner paper tissues when I have a cold or cry but other than, everything is solved with water and a towel, kitchen towel, kitchen sponge or a rag. When I was a kid, we actually only had cloth napkins. My brother who has allergies still uses them. I can't imagine having to wash them. I'd throw up every time. 😅

(We aren't talking about toilet paper, right? 😅We always had that, to be clear.)
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@CrazyMusicLover
Of course you're right my friend😄. I was playing. I completely agree with you. Just about diapers!!
So I get you, I just have a thing with wet fish rags and germs.. I hate touching them they are wet and if I don't wash the hell out of them they are gross and slimy.
But I know that's fll in my head.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@CurrentName Traditional cloth diapers and cloth napkins are a big no to me. 😆 If I had to deal with any of those, I'd definitely opt for disposable ones.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@CrazyMusicLover
Ooohhhh I see , My friend , that your so zealous activism of earlier does have a line that that you won't cross!!

That reminds of the movie

"Mr Bonds were not so different after all. "

Or when thc evil dude in Enter the Dragon, tells the American karate chsmpion.

"I was right Mr Roper, there's a line you won't cross'

😄

I remember eating mayonnaise sandwiches when I was like 10-12 years old as a snack.
We never had snacks in the house, and I needed permission just to make the sandwich.
We had strips of cloth and each kid got 2 each week to use as meal napkins and we were expected to keep them pretty clean just in case we ever had guests.

I barely use condiments but always have ketchup mustard and relish along with mayonnaise.
But I never thought about the whys of that until now,,,

Maybe. Perhpas.
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
@HikingMan that reminds me of when me and my sister made sugar bread, it was butter with sugar in the toaster oven. Anyway, I believe that was the recipe butter and sugar
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@HikingMan wow!
And yeah. Crazy how we don't think about those things as weird when growing up. That's just the way things were. Everybody was poor around.
It was not until I started visiting school friends that I noticed. And even then I thought..they must be rich!!

Mayonnaise sandwiches, yes. And to this day they are one of my favorite comfort food.

Your napkin story tho. That's something.

When we were little out mom would buy us the heaviest pair of boots ever manufactured at the beginning of each school year. And we were to make them last the whole year.

What a thing eh?

Thdnk you for sharing. I really appreciate your story.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Jonjdw
Those were good!!
Toast with melted butter and sugar and cinnamon!!!

I was given zero respect growing up and not much has changed
Aquaabyss · New

CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Aquaabyss
Boughie????????
Aquaabyss · New
@CurrentName it's a saying
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Aquaabyss Oh ok 😊
In reference to the paper plates and things. That would have also been a luxury for us

Now I buy them so I don't have to do dishes.
Lilnonames · F
i too have paper towels in kitchen ,bathroom and bedroom and car
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Lilnonames
Oh yeah the car!!
Of course!!! 😊
Baybreeze · 41-45, F
Never had cable once growing up. All my friends would talk about different shows and I felt left out sometimes.
Like someone else mentioned we also reused baggies. My mom would even take out baggies that looked 'clean' to her on the top of the trash. That to me was going too far😐
And the last thing is, our meals were always just hamburger or spaghetti.. something very simple. I see these people have all these memories of their mom making casseroles, homey meals, etc, baking. Now I love to make casserole whenever possible...
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Baybreeze Hamburger and spaghetti for sure.
Baybreeze · 41-45, F
@CurrentName It was a pot of blood, like from a pig? 😯 Glad you enjoyed the sausages!
I remember another time I was in the backseat of a girl from high school, she was driving us home from a camping trip. The other girl in front was uppity and I wasn't close with them. They started complaining about their home didn't have a third bathroom and that their door wasn't this or that color and other things their big homes didn't have. I am SUPER shy but I just couldn't stay quiet any longer. I said, oh wow well I've never lived in a house, just apartments. And they both were silent. 😟 I still have never lived in a house lol.
