On paper towels.

Growing up poor, there were things that were definitely luxuries. Things like Coke, fir example, was something that you learned to drink slowly so it woujd last longer

Another one of those "luxury" items for us was Paper Towels.

I knew that when there were paper towels in the house, we were going to have a good week. Still to this day, I make sure to have paper towels around the house. In the kitchen, in the bathroom, in my room. I buy them two and three at a time and I never run out of them.

For those who grew up poor, what was that one item that you grew up without that you make sure to have plenty of now?

My veggies for sure. I’ve always been a huge fan of veggies as a snack but veggies were always more than chips or cookies because there wasn’t a store brand of the item. Now fresh veggies in my house is a must. That and my Coke 🤣

Vegetables? Are you kidding? I didn't know of them until I was in the army. Not growing up with them made vegetables strange and gross up me. Never ate them.
It wasnt until the army forced me to eat them they I was like.. hm.. not bad😊

And the coke, of course the Coke! 😊

Thdnk you do much for sharing!!

Lunch money for my kids we couldnt afford lunch tickets so my mom packed my lunch, and we lived in a smaller rural area didnt have the free lunch program

I hate how sometimes those programs even tho good intended, they end up singling some poor kid out in front of all the other kids.
We always reused ziplock bags

Yes. I've heard of that!!
But if you think about it that's not too bad of an idea. Fir certain things of course.
We didn't have ziplock bags tho.
The bag was a paper bag and for the "zip lock" you just rolled down the bag opening.

That's a good one.. thank you for sharing .

@faery
Yeah ☹
Especially as a kid.
That does bring back some pretty bad memories. There's really not much more that can be said about that besides it sucks.
Thank you for sharing that.

I remember eating mayonnaise sandwiches when I was like 10-12 years old as a snack.
We never had snacks in the house, and I needed permission just to make the sandwich.
We had strips of cloth and each kid got 2 each week to use as meal napkins and we were expected to keep them pretty clean just in case we ever had guests.

I barely use condiments but always have ketchup mustard and relish along with mayonnaise.
But I never thought about the whys of that until now,,,

Maybe. Perhpas.

@HikingMan that reminds me of when me and my sister made sugar bread, it was butter with sugar in the toaster oven. Anyway, I believe that was the recipe butter and sugar

@HikingMan wow!
And yeah. Crazy how we don't think about those things as weird when growing up. That's just the way things were. Everybody was poor around.
It was not until I started visiting school friends that I noticed. And even then I thought..they must be rich!!

Mayonnaise sandwiches, yes. And to this day they are one of my favorite comfort food.

Your napkin story tho. That's something.

When we were little out mom would buy us the heaviest pair of boots ever manufactured at the beginning of each school year. And we were to make them last the whole year.

What a thing eh?

Thdnk you for sharing. I really appreciate your story.

We didn’t have soda, but maybe it wasn’t as much as what I thought paper towels didn’t matter to me.

Can’t really think of anything. Things have not been good lately due to circumstances.

@Jonjdw im sorry to hear that. And believe me I can relate. You don't know how much.
