Did/do you have meal time house rules?

At our table we had to eat whatever was put in front of us. Leave nothing uneaten or there would be no dessert.
Many a time I would still be sitting at the table well after everyone had finished and left the table. Pushing the food around the plate.
When my Grandmother had washed all the the dishes she would say to me, " Get out of my sight"
No dessert for me and off I would go.

We were required to eat all the food on our plates, also. However, we never had desserts unless it was a holiday or a birthday, or summertime when my mother would dust off the old crank style ice cream maker.

My father's scowl was usually punishment enough.

We were also required to say Grace before eating, could not put our elbows on the table, and had to put our paper napkins in our laps. 馃槈

The only rule was table manners.

@calicuz No elbows on the table, chew with mouth closed.

Times then were different. I lived a similar lifestyle with my gran. Clean plate club or if get a stern scolding. But i ate a lot. So i usually finished everything.

No phones at the table, you have to stay until everyone has finished. Meal times have always been family time

My mom made whatever dish I wanted and still I didn't wanna eat. I had an eating disorder that started when I was 2.
She never forced me to eat.

However the school teacher in elementary school could sit past the lunch break to force me to eat up everything on the plate. I got late to class several times.

@Queendragonfly Looking back, did the Elementary school teacher do a good thing?
Were you admonished for being late back to class or was there an understanding that you need encouragement to finish your meals?
If you had the chance, would you thank that elementary teacher for her concern over your health?

My dad used to make us drink a glass of milk before or with dinner. And we had to eat it all too though dinner was chinesev syle you just take what you want off of the serving dishes. Of course when we were young my mom would do that for us.

1. Eat what you were served
2. Help do the dishes afterward
