so many pool related stories and i have one too - when i was in college i worked at a camp for kids with special needs. i got very close to one of the campers who was nonverbal and that meant a lot to his mom because he had been asked to leave the camp early the year before because he was hurting people. she would gush every day after camp about how much she appreciated the relief of knowing he loved me and wouldn’t hurt me. he was about 11 years old and really big (a foot taller than me and probably a foot wider) and really sweet, always smiling.
one day i was playing in the pool with him like any other day and out of no where he pulled me under water and held me there. he also… did something very bad to me repeatedly that made me start inhaling water. i thought i was going to die. he completely overpowered me. i couldn’t move or fight and i was panicking and drowning.
a lifeguard who i had just been chatting with saved my life. she was tiny and brave. the camper didn’t even give her a hard time, i think he was scared of what he did to me too. just someone jumping down from above spooked him enough to let go. she sat with me while i puked and recovered. the kid wasn’t allowed to come back. i just went back to work, not having the words for what happened.
but anyway lifeguards rock!

I probably have a lot of those tbh
For one, I died for half an hour as an infant. I don't know any of the doctors but they brought me back.
I also firmly believe my grandma saved my life when I tried to end it, even though she's gone

@ChiefJustWalks Fuuuck that is brutal! Is it something you still deal with, then?

An ambulance crew took me out of the road after a serious accident. At first they thought I was dead. I fell out of the car but the car door closed on part of my snowsuit. I was dragged in the road until my snowsuit ripped. I was 3 years old.

Never been close to death. Got caught in a riptide once and my parents pulled me out, they had to shut down the beach after bc it was getting dangerous. I was a strong swimmer though, and the riptide wasn't nearly strong enough to overcome an adult.

There's been a few times when I was a kid but the most recent one was earlier this year. I had a seizure and fell, I hit my shoulder against the wall which didn't entirely break my fall but lessened the impact on my head. I was dizzy, was at risk of my head hitting the wall behind me because of the sudden jerks and I was also struggling to breath. I don't even remember what the woman looks like but I do remember a woman sitting beside me, holding my hand and moving her arm under my head for support which both helped clear my airway and also created a barrier between the wall and my head. Then because I was having a panic attack on top of the seizure, I remember her getting me some water and sitting on the floor with me until I was fully composed. It was very sweet of her. Especially because I didn't know her.

@HijabaDabbaDoo That sounds terrifying. I am really glad that she was there for you <3

@caccoon any experience where you feel or are out of control is terrifying but I think experiences like this instil a little hope in humanity too.

Cop car turned the corner at just the right time to send the four guys surrounding me running away. First time in my life I was thankful to see those red and blue lights flashing.

@SarahAndSamantha Must have been terrifying. I'm glad you survived!

When I was 4 I ended up choking on a strawberry I was eating. I remember it was at a party hosted by the neighbors of a family friend. Not sure who saved me, probably my parents.
It took me 15 years before I could eat another strawberry. I still remember how big of an event it was for me, as a college freshman, to finally get the nerve to eat a stupid little fruit. Me and strawberries are cool now. I forgive them for trying to kill me

I choked on pizza at a young age and only really started to like it again in my late 20s. I didn't even remember choking on it

@caccoon Oh man, that must've made things awkward considering everyone else's love affair with pizza
caccoon · 36-40
@TinyViolins I was just thinking about how it's not an event for me anymore. XD Haven't thought about it in a long time
I always just tried to stay quiet about it ahaha

My sister from getting hit by a bus when I was 7 too. She was only 15 years old, but was quick to react.

Trying to teach yourself to swim as a kid in deep water is a bad idea. Lifeguard hauled me out and gave me CPR. Ruined the family holiday

@BeefySenpie I'm glad you were saved <3 Doesn't matter about the holiday

My half brother pulled me out of a pool when I was 4. I remember. I’m pretty sure he pushed me too 😆 but I remember drowning and being pulled out of the water by my hair

When I was 21 I woke up in the middle of the night with an asthma attack.
I called for my parents and then dropped where I was standing trying to catch my breath. I coded right in front of my family. Heart stopped, I turned blue, pissed myself, smelled like I died [dad knew that 'smell' through his job] - I died.
My dad performed CPR and after a few minutes successfully revived me just as the paramedics arrived.

A camel unfiltered cigarette once saved me from going to jail in Bermuda .
I’m getting back on the cruise ship and had bought weed in port . When asked to empty my pockets a pack of rolling papers fell out. The customs official looked at me side eyed.
I was smoking one of my dads unfiltered camels at that very moment and just held it up for him to see.
He let me get back on the boat .
That was a close one !

By cesarean birth. My sister was stuck in the birth canal. I needed out. Breathed oxygen nearly simultaneously.

When a horse was stomping me on my chest and back in the pasture. My uncle saw it from the front porch and ran to me and picked me up and carried me to the house and laid me on the bed where I woke up. I got to stay home the next day so they could watch me. I had horse shoe shaped bruises on my chest and back plus scratches.

The man that was obsessed with me came to my house when I was 17. I was outside on the deck and he showed up. I was the only one home. I tried to get back into the house but I couldn’t. He grabbed me and I wasn’t strong enough.
He had me up against the house, he was touching me and telling me what he planned to do to me. I will never forget the way he smelled.
My dad came home, he pulled him off of me and threw him off the deck. He got away but we called the police and I got a restraining order against him. I don’t know what would have happened if my dad hadn’t have come home but it wouldn’t have been good for me.

I was like 6 years old and my mom was methed out. We were at some strangers house and I was alone, which was normal at the time. I went and walked on a frozen lake and fell in. Some random girl that I was playing with helped pull me out. If it wasn't for her I would have died. My mom was embarrassed when we got back and told her. She could care less that I was freezing.

I got beat up to basically inches of my life. I lost so much blood. I don't remember anything just everything went dark. I woke up in the hospital days later. This stranger called 911 and visited me every other day.
