While you were young what form of punishment did your Parents mete out?

My Mother was sadistic in her beating of me. Most likely because her Mother - My Grandmother was sadistic in the beating of her.
My Mother divorced, her Mother came to look after the children. She was more sadistic than my Mother.
It seems what ever was meted out to each generation, carried through.
Until laws began to curb the sadism.
That is not to say that beating of children has stopped. We know it still goes on.
Back when I was young, there was no recourse to the beatings. It was allowed, encouraged, to instill compliance and discipline.
Failed miserably in my case. Rebellious, obstinate child that I was.
The more I was beaten, the more rebellious I was.

Both of my parents come from backgrounds that believe strongly in physical punishment. My mother was raised in the Southern Black tradition by mother, a hoard of aunts, and grandparents who while loving and protective didn't hesitate to reach for a belt, switch, or even hot wheels track. My father was born in Taiwan and moved to California with his family when he was 7 years old. His parents believed strongly in the cane, belt, or whatever else came to hand as well as kneeling and scolding self esteem into a crater. Thankfully while Mama and Papa both carried the belief of corporal punishment over to their own children they didn't go to that extent.... usually. Both parents would threaten a lot more than they actually did anything but Mama would lay the belt on the coffee table to make a point like "Do we NEED to bring the belt into this?!" or Papa would make us kneel down sometimes on rice with arms up and say he was going to hit us if we didn't stay like that for x amount of time. The state of North Dakota approved of this kind of discipline...until my drunk father bruised the side of my older brother's head and less than 6 months later drunkenly cracked said brother's ribs and beat me with his belt and buckle so savagely that everywhere he hit me was either black and blue, lacerated, or the skin gone entirely. The next day he sent us to school like everything was normal....and we didn't make it back home to Mama who had been forced to file for divorce if she ever wanted to see her children again for almost 3 years. We were 12,11,9, and 6 years old when she filed.

After we came home from foster care Mama was so exhausted from the protracted divorce that left her destitute and on welfare
and afraid that she'd never see her children again. She wouldn't even raise her voice. We ran all over her as a result. Part of the ordeal had included several charges of endangering the welfare of minor and parenting classes to learn how to discipline non violently but really she would never discipline her precious children anymore beyond talking.

@amaricul That is sad. Corporal punishment should never be used on children.
What happened to your father?
amaricul · 22-25, F
@Gusman As I said before my father moved to the USA(legally) with his family at the age of 7 and he eventually naturalized after marrying my mother. He left North Dakota and returned to California as soon as he got divorce papers and was removed from the family home by the police due to a restraining order. He was supposed to surrender his passport and he did but he only gave the US passport. He was in California with his family when he found out that a grand jury had indicted him on enough charges such as felony child abuse and aggravated assault and he could be in prison until his youngest child then 6 years old was full grown and he was a grandfather. His solution to evade the charges? He obtained a new passport from the Taiwanese embassy and fled to Taiwan where he prolonged the divorce proceedings for 3 years and has NEVER paid a quarter of child support.
I can relate to this and I'm almost half your age. My maternal ancestors were all sadistic arseholes and my paternal ancestors are narcissistic without the physical discipline. It got better when corporal punishment was banned from school and eventually a backward community obligated to follow protocol.
It's awful. I'm sorry you went through it, yet happy you're better than the circumstances presented to you. Even if it took a hell of a long time to get through it. @Gusman

@DrScissorhands Thank you.
You are over your upbringing?
Yes. It took me years too, to stop resenting my mother. She has gone mellow in her old age. We've
nothing but love for each other now. @Gusman

My grandmother raised me and was very cruel and spiteful. I was made to go to church 4 times a week and found it hard to sit still so she'd often pull my hair and hit me for that. I couldn't master the piano so was made sit there for hours and everytime I made a mistake she'd hit me. One day I stood up to her and hit her back and told her never to touch me again and she didn't.

@Gusman she was beaten as a kid and used to quote from the bible "spare the rod, spoil the child". The church elders used to encourage it too and say you have to break a child's will. I never had kids and I'm sure if I did I would of talked to them if they did wrong rather than screaming and hitting them.

@meggie Truly, religion can be sadistic
Saddens me when I see children being raised in an over zealous religious family.

@Gusman it is as if they have no choice until they get older and then they are called worldly and quickly distanced so they don't lead the other kids astray.

Originally, for me it was being grounded. "No computer for a week."

Then, in my later teenage years, I was going through a period of angst on account of a few things going so horribly wrong and to cut a long story short, it gave me the idea of self-punishment, mainly in the form of self-inflicted torture.

I got shouted at, told off. That was enough. I got the odd slap on the legs and was stopped from going out a few times when i was in nt teens...but thats as bad as it got. I guess i was well behaved, but i didnt want to upset my parents. I felt so vad at letting them down. Respect i guess....but i didnt get punished as such.

Gusman · 61-69, M
@Jackaloftheazuresand Who meted out the punishment?
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
@Gusman my father
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
I used to get hit a lot...but i suspect i only got a fraction of what my Dad copped from his Dad.

I've never laid a finger on my kids.
xinbaba · 61-69, M
Dad whipped us with his belt. Mom would take off a shoe and pop us on the crown of the head.
Silent treatment.. we were a non violent family 😁

I don't think you were alone in that
