While you were young what form of punishment did your Parents mete out?

My Mother was sadistic in her beating of me. Most likely because her Mother - My Grandmother was sadistic in the beating of her.
My Mother divorced, her Mother came to look after the children. She was more sadistic than my Mother.
It seems what ever was meted out to each generation, carried through.
Until laws began to curb the sadism.
That is not to say that beating of children has stopped. We know it still goes on.
Back when I was young, there was no recourse to the beatings. It was allowed, encouraged, to instill compliance and discipline.
Failed miserably in my case. Rebellious, obstinate child that I was.
The more I was beaten, the more rebellious I was.
I can relate to this and I'm almost half your age. My maternal ancestors were all sadistic arseholes and my paternal ancestors are narcissistic without the physical discipline. It got better when corporal punishment was banned from school and eventually a backward community obligated to follow protocol.
It's awful. I'm sorry you went through it, yet happy you're better than the circumstances presented to you. Even if it took a hell of a long time to get through it. [@546016,Gusman]

[@957625,DrScissorhands] Thank you.
You are over your upbringing?
Yes. It took me years too, to stop resenting my mother. She has gone mellow in her old age. We've
nothing but love for each other now. [@546016,Gusman]

My grandmother raised me and was very cruel and spiteful. I was made to go to church 4 times a week and found it hard to sit still so she'd often pull my hair and hit me for that. I couldn't master the piano so was made sit there for hours and everytime I made a mistake she'd hit me. One day I stood up to her and hit her back and told her never to touch me again and she didn't.

[@546016,Gusman] she was beaten as a kid and used to quote from the bible "spare the rod, spoil the child". The church elders used to encourage it too and say you have to break a child's will. I never had kids and I'm sure if I did I would of talked to them if they did wrong rather than screaming and hitting them.

[@1119351,meggie] Truly, religion can be sadistic
Saddens me when I see children being raised in an over zealous religious family.

[@546016,Gusman] it is as if they have no choice until they get older and then they are called worldly and quickly distanced so they don't lead the other kids astray.

Originally, for me it was being grounded. "No computer for a week."

Then, in my later teenage years, I was going through a period of angst on account of a few things going so horribly wrong and to cut a long story short, it gave me the idea of self-punishment, mainly in the form of self-inflicted torture.

I got shouted at, told off. That was enough. I got the odd slap on the legs and was stopped from going out a few times when i was in nt teens...but thats as bad as it got. I guess i was well behaved, but i didnt want to upset my parents. I felt so vad at letting them down. Respect i guess....but i didnt get punished as such.

I used to get hit a lot...but i suspect i only got a fraction of what my Dad copped from his Dad.

I've never laid a finger on my kids.
Silent treatment.. we were a non violent family 😁
