A friend you fell out badly with and are no longer speaking to is dying - would you call them?

nedkelly · 61-69, M
NO, fcuk him and he can die a lovely prick
Firm and decisive. @nedkelly
Dusty101 · F
I don't know. I'd be afraid I'd startle them and make them feel worse as they're dying...
That wouldn't be fair.
So I think I might just leave them be!
But let their loved ones know I'm thinking of them!
Interesting approach. @Dusty101
Bushmanoz · 61-69, M
@Dusty101 Well preferably you didn't just leap up from beside them and yell SURPRISE!!
Dusty101 · F
@Bushmanoz jayzusssss NO!
xixgun · M
If we aren't speaking, how would I know?
xixgun · M
@LukeTheDuke Yep, and that's always been the decision of others
But you have the power too. @xixgun
xixgun · M
@LukeTheDuke Yes, I have the power to say, "You asked for this to be the way things are." And keep them that way.
No, the friend wants to communicate with people they value and you are no longer one of those people
This makes a lot of sense. But equally, a lot of people would actually like to rekindle friendship but are just standing on their pride and want you to make the first move. @BeefySenpie
@LukeTheDuke That's just being stupid
What’s stupid? @BeefySenpie
MasterofNone · 26-30, M
I might not call them. However if they call me needing something I would help them regardless of the fact that whether they are dying.
Thats very commendable that you would help if they needed it. @MasterofNone
goliathtree · 56-60, M
Most likely, but it depends on why exactly we fell out.
Let’s say it was a really serious falling out ? @goliathtree
goliathtree · 56-60, M
@LukeTheDuke shot my dog serious or screwed me over serious. Shot my dog serious I wouldn't have an interest. Screwed me over serious....I'd probably call.

Of course if he shot my dog, he would already be dead....
@goliathtree Absolutely. No one should get away with shooting man’s best friend.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
Odd, this very scenario happened to me just last November. A longtime family friend named Web (short for Webster) had a severe falling out with me and all my relatives. After several years of no longer associating with him, Web was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer last year and was placed in hospice. My father decided to say goodbye to him even though they are no longer friends.
This is the only real life example I received. I think, in reality, many people wouldn’t know what they would do if really faced with the situation. @BlueMetalChick
No because I'm not the kind of person that forgives easily those who have wronged me
SW-User
If it was bad he might not want to talk to you himself
Very possible@SW-User
Most definitely
Then why not make up before it came to that? @DayDreaming2
@LukeTheDuke I believe all the hurt I feel would just melt away, and I would be there for them in any capacity they would need me
Ahh, you’re soft-hearted. @DayDreaming2
He or she WAS at one time a friend. In the name of that friendship, even if it’s gone now, should be honored. At least you’ll be able to live with the fact that you at least said goodbye after they’re gone.
So why not call before it comes to that? @stratosranger
@LukeTheDuke That was not the original question.
I’m discussing. But if that’s not your thing, then fine I suppose. @stratosranger
nope ..send em a bag of potting soil
Lol 😂 A solidly decisive answer.@NightsWatch

Understood. @missbeez
No I'm no longer speaking with them.. don't you mean ex friend? 😂😂

Actually i dont have any such friend. Im still friends with my friends and the others i don't consider as friends..

But i wanna know why do you ask? What happened in the first place that they were so disagreeable or were you the disagreeable one and how do you even know they are ill? Its more a rhetorical question.. i don't really Need to know.. maybe they aren't that great of friends if they fall out over that.. like idk
No I don’t mean ex friend, as you can’t fall out with an ex friend. Re-read.

It’s a question to explore a moral dilemma.

How would a person know - through a mutual contact. It’s just rhetorical, it doesn’t really need to be dissected. What’s more interesting is people’s thought processes on the moral issues.

@SStarfish
@LukeTheDuke i don't think its a moral issue. I think someone (or both) of the two had an attitude problem (arrogance) that made them stop speaking.. but that’s just my opinion.. real friends wouldn't do that .. there’s some other issue involved .. maybe that coulda been a moral issue.. but just speaking or not speaking isn't imo
@SStarfish the moral issues are anger and forgiveness, themes explored in depth by many religions and philosophers, such as the Roman philosopher Seneca’s book titled ‘of anger’.
SW-User
I wouldn't reach out to him. I need to be disciplined and shouldn't have fallen in the first place.
SW-User
@LukeTheDuke He was my best friend the only one I ever had but not everything can be fixed.
@SW-User I agree not all can be fixed. But some old friendships can.
SW-User
@LukeTheDuke I wish, I so wish but no :/
SW-User
No, that door is closed. I don't think it would be appreciated. When I fall out with someone it tends to be spectacular
But that’s the thing about doors (and friendship), they close and they open, even if they have been slammed shut! @SW-User
calicuz · 56-60, M
Yes, without hesitation
@calicuz Yes that’s the point you’ve fallen out, so what difference does it make now they’re dying?
calicuz · 56-60, M
@LukeTheDuke

Don't let him/her end their life with a grudge
So it’s ok to live with a grudge but not to die with one. I can’t grasp that. @calicuz
BalmyNites · F
@LukeTheDuke Thank you, I just believe in ‘do as you would be done by’
@BalmyNites absolutely, that’s the principle I live by.
BalmyNites · F
@LukeTheDuke It’s a good principle 🤗
Without a second thought.
Why? @Vivaci
@LukeTheDuke coz ego should always be suppressed over ethics.
On that basis, why not suppress the ego and call them before it comes to them being on their deathbed? @Vivaci
Moonpenny · F
Yes, I would.
Moonpenny · F
@LukeTheDuke I would put everything aside that we'd fallen out about. It would be forgotten in an instance. Because I would want them to know our friendship was bigger than any differences we'd had. And I would want them to feel they could ask anything of me at such a time.
Well then if things meant so much to both sides It seems they should have reconciled earlier than waiting for one to end up on their deathbed. @Moonpenny
Moonpenny · F
@LukeTheDuke Well, it's never usually as clear-cut as that, is it? You're not actually waiting for someone to end up on their deathbed. For all intents and purposes, they won't have crossed your mind if you've fallen out. Supposing someone else told you of their bad news, then it's a matter of personal choice how you react. That's just the way I know I would react.
They had they’re whole life to call if they wanted to repair the friendship. @MOONAMONA86
MOONAMONA86 · 36-40, F
@LukeTheDuke 🤷‍♀️
💁🏼‍♂️@MOONAMONA86
Peaches · F
If I knew about it and thought they wanted me to, 😔💙I would.
SW-User
I most likely wouldn't know.
Yes, it’s a very difficult dilemma. @SW-User
JupiterDreams · 31-35
@LukeTheDuke I'm an empath. I would want to...
So why not do it earlier. Why wait until they are on their deathbed?@JupiterDreams
JupiterDreams · 31-35
@LukeTheDuke Depends on the falling out. If they told me off and said hurtful things, that's why I'd wait... But in normal circumstances I'd do it after a few months, if I wasn't feeling panicky.

@LukeTheDuke Who is saying one shouldn't?
That’s the scenario in the question. I want to explore the moral maze. @Steve42

Then why not make amends before it comes to that? @RubySoo
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@LukeTheDuke i always try. Always. Im not good at letting anyone go and hate to leave a friendship up in the air.
Any friendship of mie thats ended and i couldnt make amends was because the other person was not willing to.
Always.

And actually...id more likely write than call.
Yes... defenitely..
Why?
@Soossie

Ofcourse and help

Then why not call before it came to that?@daydeeo
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@LukeTheDuke Why not indeed?
SW-User
I probably would.
Why? @jeancolby
Bushmanoz · 61-69, M
I dont know, would depend on why we were no longer speaking, and if calling would help them. I wouldn't do it purely to cleanse my soul.
Bushmanoz · 61-69, M
@LukeTheDuke in peoples defense, when someone posts a hypothetical question they fill in the blanks to the story themselves, so maybe it just didn't fit with the one you had in mind when you posted
I’m happy for people to go in the direction they want. It’s just interesting to pose a dilemma. @Bushmanoz
Bushmanoz · 61-69, M
@LukeTheDuke yeah, its interesting reading different responses
Lostpoet · M
Do I know that they are dying?
Then why not make amends before it comes to them being on their deathbed? @Lostpoet
Lostpoet · M
@LukeTheDuke cause that's the only time I'm willing to forgive them.
Why is forgiveness a gift to the dying but not for the living? @Lostpoet
