How do you cope with depressing thoughts?

Depression has been taking its toll on me and I just don't know what to do.

Distraction. Watch TV or movies, read a book, make yourself hang out with friends, draw something, write something, anything that will make you focus on the task instead of depressing thoughts.

Talking about it also helps, either with friends or a therapist.

Talk to someone about it, and look into cognitive behavioral therapy.
I make new thoughts that beat up the bad thoughts.

Walk, get some fresh air. Journal your thoughts. Light therapy, if you live up north. Yoga and meditation. Try to get together with a friend and talk about how you are feeling. Pray, if you feel moved to do so. Seek out a therapist, if possible.

You have to get to know your own self and what works for YOU.
I tried not thinking about my ex in any way for a week after a breakup.
Somehow, I did it, but when I eventually did again, the sadness hit me like a bus.
I concluded that SOME of the melancholy must be purged, not choked off.
Your mileage may vary.
