American spelling -- the battle continues

akindheart · 61-69, F
i am a stickler on spelling. when i see mistakes in the newspapers, it makes me boil
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@akindheart I get both upset and amused by the increasing frequency of misplaced modifiers in news stories.

Years ago, our local paper had a story about a college volleyball player who was injured. The story reported that a few days later, she "was able to watch the game with her entire family in a neck brace."

That must have been cozy.

I'm English so I've always used British spellings, but I don't tell Americans their spellings are wrong.
MaryDreamilton · 46-50, F
@AthrillatheHunt No, it's not. What the hell is the "B" for? 🤔
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@MaryDreamilton you are so right ! My sincerest apologies MD.
MaryDreamilton · 46-50, F
@AthrillatheHunt Apology accepted. :)

@ChipmunkErnie

While we're on the subject, let's talk about that word "arse".....😄
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@DrWatson Don't arsk me -- I'm not British.

Newspaper's are almost obsolete here now. Might be due to the fact they can't spell.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@akindheart I can't imagine paying that for day old news.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@nudistsueaz i like reading a newspaper to be honest . the only reason i get it is for local news and events.
MaryDreamilton · 46-50, F
@nudistsueaz I wish rogue apostrophes were obsolete.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@KiwiBird With a what? 😂
@DrWatson she meant.. I should have said ‘lolz’ with an S.. since we’re having a shot about American English 🤓
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I know. I was playing along.

I figured it was about zed versus zee.
"Mammy" ?
Hmmm…🤨
@DrWatson I texted my friend. She said,

I call her "Mam", why ?

So you’re probably right.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Ah, now that I see that, "Mam" does look familiar.
ArtieKat · M
@DrWatson "Mammy" is quite typically Irish - Liverpool, where I live, has a huge Irish population. And it is pronounced with a long "a" because of the double m in the middle. 🤷‍♀️
